Morgan Freeman was born June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, to a teacher and a barber. He was raised in Mississippi, where he became interested in acting and performance.

He has also starred in acclaimed films such as Glory, Lean on Me, and Unforgiven, demonstrating his versatility and talent. He rose to international popularity and acclaim for his portrayal as Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding in The Shawshank Redemption, which is one of the most beloved films of all time.

He narrated the film in his soothing, authoritative voice, which became his signature. He received his third Academy Award nomination for this role. He proceeded to collaborate with some of the most talented directors and actors in the business, including Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, and Christopher Nolan.

In 2004, he received his first Oscar for his role as a former boxer in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. Morgan Freeman has been married twice: first to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw from 1967 until 1979, and then to Myrna Colley-Lee from 1984 until 2010. He has four children from prior partnerships. In 2008, he was involved in a major car accident that left him with injuries to his left hand and arm.

He underwent surgery and rehabilitation and recovered fully. He is a strong supporter of several organizations and charities, including the American Cancer Society, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the Mississippi Animal Rescue League, and the Grenada Relief Fund.

He also owns and runs Ground Zero, a blues club in Mississippi, and Madidi, a restaurant in the same state. He is a licensed pilot who owns many aircraft. He’s also interested in sailing, golf, and astronomy.
