Joe Flaherty Dies At The Age Of 82
A founding member of the cherished Canadian sketch series “SCTV,” comedian Joe Flaherty has passed away. He was eighty-two. On Tuesday, Flaherty’s daughter Gudrun said that her father passed away on Monday after a brief illness.
Born in Pittsburgh, Flaherty worked at The Second City for seven years in Chicago before relocating north of the border to assist in establishing the theater’s Toronto branch.
Later, he co-starred with John Candy and Catherine O’Hara in the film “SCTV,” which was set in a fake TV station called Second City Television and featured a cast of absurd people in front of and behind the cameras. Guy Caballero, the head of the network, and Count Floyd, the vampire-like TV personality, were two of Flaherty’s characters.
Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, and Eugene Levy were among the other former cast members. His writing on “SCTV” earned him Emmys in 1982 and 1983, and he went on to work in TV and movies for many years.
Through his notable roles as a heckler in the 1996 film “Happy Gilmore” and as an outdated parent in the 1999–2000 television comedy “Freaks and Geeks,” he was exposed to subsequent generations.

His daughter said in the statement on Tuesday, “Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the 40s and 50s. Cinema wasn’t merely a hobby for him; it profoundly influenced his career, particularly his unforgettable time with ‘SCTV.’ He cherished every moment spent on the show, so proud of its success and so proud to be part of an amazing cast.”
Actress Jennifer Tilly posted on X, “Joe Flaherty played my dad in ‘The Wrong Guy.’ I was so thrilled to be able to work with him. His performance was pitch-perfect. A great comedian. Gone too soon.”
