Is Jamie Clayton Transgender?
Yes, Jamie Clayton is a transgender woman who openly embraces her identity and is happy about it. She had s*x reassignment surgery in 2003, which she credits with bringing fulfillment into her life.
Jamie Clayton Early Life and Transition
Jamie Clayton was born on January 15, 1978, in San Diego, California, to criminal defense attorney Howard Clayton and event director Shelley Clayton. She has a sister named Toni. Clayton understood from a young age that she was a female trapped in a boy’s body, but she lacked the language and support to express herself fully.
She was bullied and harassed at school and home, and she struggled with depression and suicidal ideation. Clayton relocated to New York City when she was 19, seeking to discover a more inclusive and diverse environment.
She worked as a makeup artist and hairstylist, and she began to investigate her femininity and s*xual orientation. She also met other transgender ladies who encouraged and assisted her in her transition.
Clayton received gender confirmation surgery in 2003, at the age of 25, describing it as “the best thing that ever happened to me”. She stated that following the surgery, she felt “complete, happy, and fulfilled”.
Jamie Clayton Career and Breakthrough
Clayton began her career in the entertainment industry in 2010, when she co-hosted and worked as a makeup artist on the VH1 reality show TRANSform Me, which featured three trans women giving cisgender people makeovers.
The show was nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program. Out magazine included Clayton in its annual “Out 100” list of influential LGBTQ+ people in 2011.
Clayton made her acting debut in 2011 as Kyla, Ray Drecker’s trans woman and love interest, on the third season of the HBO comedy-drama series Hung. She also appeared in various web series, including Dirty Work, Hustling, and Scissr, and voiced Jien Garson, the founder of the Andromeda Initiative, in the video game Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Clayton’s breakthrough role came in 2015 when Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who are both trans women, and J. Michael Straczynski cast her as Nomi Marks in the sci-fi drama series Sense8. Sense8 depicts eight people from around the world who are psychologically and emotionally connected.
Nomi Marks, a hacker, blogger, and activist from San Francisco, is in a lesbian relationship with Freema Agyeman’s character, Amanita. Clayton said she was lured to the part because of the chance to work with the Wachowskis and play a complicated and authentic trans character. She also applauded the show’s diversity, inclusivity, and portrayal of LGBTQ+ topics and themes.
Sense8 received critical praise and garnered a cult following, but Netflix canceled it after two seasons due to exorbitant production costs. However, following a major fan campaign, Netflix agreed to make a two-and-a-half-hour conclusion episode, which premiered in 2018.
