Early Life and Education

Grohl was born to James and Virginia Grohl in Warren, Ohio, on January 14, 1969. When he was six years old, his parents divorced, and his mother raised him in Springfield, Virginia.

He was drawn to music at a young age and taught himself to play the guitar and drums. He attended multiple high schools before dropping out at 17 to pursue his musical career.

David Grohl Music Career

Grohl began his musical career in 1986 as a drummer for the punk rock band Scream. He joined Nirvana in 1990, following the departure of the band’s previous drummer, Chad Channing.

He was a member of Nirvana’s breakthrough album Nevermind (1991), which sold over 30 million copies worldwide and cemented the band’s status as one of the most important artists of the 1990s. Nirvana’s subsequent albums, In Utero (1993) and MTV Unplugged in New York (1994), also featured Grohl.

Nirvana split up in 1994, following the death of lead vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain. Grohl established Foo Fighters as a solo project after Nirvana disbanded in 1994. On the band’s self-titled debut album, released in 1995, he played all the instruments and performed all the vocals.

He eventually enlisted the help of other musicians, including bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Pat Smear, and drummer Taylor Hawkins, to form the band. The Color and the Shape (1997), There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999), Wasting Light (2011), and Medicine at Midnight (2021) are among the 11 studio albums released by Foo Fighters.

The band has received 12 Grammy nominations and has sold over 25 million records worldwide. Other musicians and bands with whom Grohl has worked include Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D, Paul McCartney, and David Bowie.

In addition, he has directed and produced many documentaries, including Sound City (2013), Sonic Highways (2014), and What Drives Us (2021). He also wrote an autobiography, The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, which will be released in 2021.
