Ben Kredich was a bright soul who brought many smiles to his town. At his best, he projected an infectious intensity that left an indelible impression. Ben’s concept of self was particularly intertwined with his stage act, emphasizing his love of self-expression. Benjamin Matthew Kredich died in Knoxville, Tennessee on Monday, August 21, 2023, after being hit by an inebriated driver while walking on the Kingston Pike sidewalk. Ben is survived by his parents, his twin brother Miles of Chicago, IL; his younger brother Coleman of New York, NY; his grandparents Ann and Arthur Lathrop of Norwich, CT; his aunt Deborah Lathrop of Norwich, CT; his aunt and uncle Kathryn and John Rohlf of Truckee, CA; and cousins Emma Lathrop, Jackson Rohlf, Lucas Rohlf, Laney Rohlf, Hannah Kredich, and Sam Kredich.
Ben frequently spoke passionately about the people he would meet in Heaven. His paternal grandfather and grandmother, Nicholas and Deborah Kredich, his great-grandmother, Ernestine Friedl, his childhood carer Shirley Noe, his assistant, companion, and champion Marsha Partin, and his beloved pets Scout, Ellington, and Basie have all joined him in Heaven.
He had always intended to have animated discussions and jam sessions with his heroes, Freddie Mercury and John Lennon. We can only smile and… imagine while we remain on Earth.
A memorial service will be place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2023, in Cox Auditorium at the Alumni Memorial Building, 1408 Middle Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37916. Friends and family will gather to celebrate Ben’s life following the funeral.
How Did Ben Kredich Die?
Ben Kredich was killed in a horrific accident near the University of Tennessee campus. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on August 21. According to the police department, it is believed that a car traveling east on Kingston Pike veered off the road and collided with him.
Walker’s minivan struck him and threw him around 20 yards. The minivan then collided with a post before coming to a halt outside the Second Presbyterian Church. Kredich was pronounced dead at the spot. In Shannon’s automobile (Shannon is the driver), heroin and other narcotics were discovered.
Shannon Blake Walker, according to police, has been charged with vehicular homicide after she allegedly veered off the road and struck Kredich.
Ben Kredich was the adored son of Matt Kredich, the University of Tennessee’s director of swimming and diving. He was also an enthusiastic participant in the UT FUTURE program, which provided individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the tools they needed to live independently.
The UT community expressed its condolences and support to the Kredich family, remembering Ben as a lovely soul who had a big impact on many people’s lives.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of life’s impermanence and the consequences of random occurrences. After this horrific event, the community is still coming to terms with his disappearance. The aftermath of Kredich’s death is a dismal reminder of life’s frailty and the unpredictable nature of human existence.

The head coach of UVA Associate, Tyler Fenwick, expressed his sympathies to his family, saying, “My heart is in a million pieces for the Kredich family and the devastating news from Knoxville.”
Betsy Sabatini Coyne said, “Ben Kredich was so musically talented, was one of the best listeners I knew, and had the best memory.”
Becky Duncan Massey wrote, “I was heartbroken to hear of Ben Kredich’s untimely and senseless death yesterday.”
