In Los Angeles Tony Sirico, who portrayed the elegantly dressed mobster Paulie Walnuts in “The Sopranos” and contributed his tough-guy swagger to movies like “Goodfellas,” passed away on Friday. He was 79.
According to Bob McGowen, Sirico’s manager, he passed away in a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, assisted care facility. The reason for the death was not immediately known.
Gennaro Anthony “Tony” Sirico passed away, according to a message from his family. “With great loss, but with great pride, love, and a whole lot of good memories,” the statement read.
For more than two decades, McGowan, who represented Sirico, described him as “faithful and giving” with a strong charitable drive. According to his manager, this included lending a hand to veteran causes that were meaningful to the Army veteran.
On Twitter, Steven Van Zandt, who portrayed Silvio Dante, a fellow mobster opposite Sirico on “The Sopranos,” described him as “legendary.”
“Bigger than life both on and off the screen. I will miss you greatly, my friend “the musician and actor stated.
On “The Sopranos,” Christopher Moltisanti, played by Michael Imperioli, referred to Sirico as his “dear buddy, collaborator, and partner in crime.”
Imperioli wrote on Instagram that Tony was “unique: he was as tough, as loyal, and as big-hearted as anyone i’ve ever known.”
McGowan reported that Sirico was unconcerned about playing a number of horrible guys, most notably Peter Paul “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri in the popular HBO drama that starred James Gandolfini portrays mob leader Tony Soprano from 1999 to 2007. Gandolfini passed away in 2013 at the age of 51.
He didn’t mind portraying a mobster, but, as Sirico described it, “he wouldn’t play a snitch,” according to McGowan.
