On June 1, 1993, she became the second female co-anchor of a major network’s daily national newscast, joining Barbara Walters. When she joined ABC News in 2010, she began conducting her own interviews.
On January 5, 1995, Chung’s interview with Republican politician Newt Gingrich’s mother, Kathleen Gingrich, about First Lady Hillary Clinton was widely panned. Chung was fired as co-anchor of CBS Evening News after an interview with an Oklahoma City Fire Department official about the April 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. In 1997, she began working for ABC News.
Chung’s CNN show, Connie Chung Tonight, was canceled during the 2003 Iraq war. CNN founder Ted Turner slammed the show as “awful.”
Weekends with Maury and Connie debuted on MSNBC in January 2006, hosted by Connie Chung and Maury Povich. The final episode of the show aired on June 17, 2006, and it was canceled after a brief run. Chung performed a parody of “Thanks for the Memories” last week.
Chung spoke with basketball legend Magic Johnson after he revealed his HIV status, and U.S. Representative Gary Condit and Claus von Bulow about Chandra Levy’s disappearance, among others, in addition to her famous interviews with Martina Navratilova, an Oklahoma City Fire Department spokesman, and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton.
