Kienholz was born in Paris, France, on June 10, 1998. When he was a child, his family relocated to Pierre, South Dakota. He is currently 25 years old, making him one of the NCAA’s oldest freshmen.

High School Career and Records
Kienholz played football, basketball, and baseball at T. F. Riggs High School in Pierre. He was a brilliant quarterback who guided his team to three straight state titles.
During his high school career, he passed for 12,345 yards and 146 touchdowns and carried for 4,567 yards and 78 touchdowns. He established the South Dakota record for most passing yards and touchdowns. In 2023, he was voted the USA Today National Athlete of the Year and was chosen to participate in the All-American Bowl.

College Recruitment and Commitment
Kienholz was a highly sought-after recruit, receiving offers from numerous elite institutions like Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame.
He initially committed to Washington in 2022, but after visiting campus and speaking with coach Ryan Day, he switched to Ohio State in 2023. He stated that he chose Ohio State because of its winning culture, history of producing great quarterbacks, and academic excellence.
College Career and Performance
Kienholz began classes at Ohio State in January 2023 and took part in spring practice. He battled for the starting quarterback position alongside Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, but he was designated the third-string quarterback behind them.
In September 2023, he made his college debut against Michigan State, completing two of three throws for 18 yards. After McCord and Brown were injured, he got his first start against Illinois in November 2023. He threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns as the Buckeyes won 42-17.
He started the next two games against Michigan and Wisconsin, assisting Ohio State to the Big Ten title. He was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony, where he came in fourth place in the voting.
He closed off his outstanding freshman season by guiding Ohio State to a 31-28 Cotton Bowl victory over Georgia, in which he threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 67 yards and a touchdown.
