Is Henipavirus Fatal? Can It Cause Death?

If Covid-19 and MonkeyPox weren’t enough, another virus potentially dangerous virus has come out of China. This new type of animal-derived Henipavirus can infect humans and has already spread in China’s Shandong Province & Henan Province.

As per an article published by scientists of China and Singapore, 35 Chinese citizens were infected in the two provinces mentioned above.

How Was This Henipavirus Found?

Eastern China, a province with a long history of coming in contact with animals, reported somewhat feverish tendencies in its citizens. So, after taking their throat swab samples, they were revealed to be infected by the new Henipavirus.

After further investigating these infected viruses, scientists discovered their association with animals as it may have come from them in the feverish residents.

Note – Chinese residents infected with Henipavirus showed cough, fever, fatigue, irritability, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and myalgia symptoms.

Is This Henipavirus Dangerous?

According to the World Health Organization, the Hinapavirus comes under the biosafety Level 4 classification, with a fatality rate of up to 75%.

But don’t panic!

Wang Linfa, a Professor in the Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Medical School, has requested everyone to maintain calm as the current cases of Langya henipavirus have not been severe or fatal.

She added, “Be cautious but avoid the panic-like situations as countless viruses already exist and can show unpredictable results on infected humans.”

Although early reports suggest that Hinipavirus is human-to-human transmissible, it’ll take a deep study to determine whether the report is accurate.

Is There a Vaccine for HenipaVirus?

As of now, there is presently no vaccination or treatment for Henipavirus.

Only supportive care is available.
