The epicenter, according to the weather bureau, was in Taitung County and occurred after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the same region on Saturday night but didn’t result in any fatalities.
The Sunday earthquake was recorded by the USGS as having a magnitude of 7.2 and a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to Taiwan’s state-run Central News Agency, a worker at a cement industry in the town of Yuli perished when machinery crashed on him during the earthquake.
Taiwan’s fire department reported that three persons whose car went off a damaged bridge were rescued and sent to the hospital, while two others were trapped in a building containing a 7-11 convenience shop when it collapsed in Yuli.
Taiwan’s Central News Agency published a video of terrified locals rushing in the direction of the collapsed building, which had produced a huge cloud of dust.

Three carriages reportedly fell off the tracks at Dongli station in eastern Taiwan after a portion of the platform roof collapsed, according to the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA). According to the fire department, one individual was hurt.
The train’s six carriages could be seen sagging in the station in photos posted by Central News Agency.
The 20 people on board were evacuated, according to TRA, and no injuries were recorded.
