Winners of the Critics Choice Awards for 2022: See the Complete List Here

The 27th Critics’ Choice Awards were held on March 13, 2022, at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, and the Savoy Hotel in London, celebrating the best in cinema and television programming in 2021. Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer presented the ceremony, which was broadcast on The CW and TBS. This was Diggs’ fourth straight year as host. On December 6, 2021, the television nominees were revealed. On December 13, 2021, the film nominees were revealed.

Belfast and West Side Story received the most nominations, with 11 apiece, followed by Dune and The Power of the Dog, each of which received ten.

With eight nominations, Succession dominated the television nominations, followed by Evil and Mare of Easttown, both with five.

Netflix garnered the most nominations of any studio or network, with 42 overall nominations, 24 for film and 18 for television.

The event, which was initially scheduled on January 9, 2022, was postponed to December 22, 2021, owing to COVID-19 pandemic worries, which included a broad rise of the Omicron strain in the United States.

It was announced on January 13, 2022, that the event would take place on March 13, 2022.

The 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards, which broadcast on The CW Sunday night, awarded “The Power of the Dog” Best Picture. Since the Golden Globes have come under more scrutiny, the awards have become an increasingly crucial barometer for Oscar contention (with NBC electing not to even air the Globes in 2022).

The Critics Choice Awards were chosen by the Critics Choice Association, which was formed in 2019 from the merged Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association and consists of 525 critics and entertainment journalists (including IndieWire’s own Kate Erbland, Eric Kohn, David Ehrlich, and Anne Thompson). This distinguishes it from the several guild awards given out at this time of year, as well as the Oscars, which are chosen by industry members.

With 11 nominations apiece, “Belfast” and “West Side Story” dominated the Critics Choice Awards. “Belfast” eventually took home awards for Best Acting Ensemble, Best Young Performer (Jude Hill), and Best Original Screenplay. Ariana DeBose received Best Supporting Actress and Best Editing for her work in “West Side Story.”

“Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” all received ten nominations, while “Licorice Pizza” and “Nightmare Alley” both received eight. “The Power of the Dog” also won Best Director for Jane Campion, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay in addition to Best Picture. “Dune” eventually took home three Oscars, including Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score. “Licorice Pizza” was named Best Comedy, while “Nightmare Alley” was rejected.

Will Smith was named Best Actor for his performance in “King Richard.” Jessica Chastain was named Best Actress for her work in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” while Troy Kotsur was named Best Supporting Actor for his work in “CODA.”

The Critics Choice Awards are unique in that they honor both cinema and television, and “Succession” garnered the most nominations for television, with eight. It was eventually named Best Drama Series, as well as Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Kieran Culkin and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Sarah Snook.

Of course, the acclaimed HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which got five nominations, won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Kate Winslet as well as Best Limited Series.

“Ted Lasso” received prizes for Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and Best Comedy Series, and swept all four categories it was nominated in, exactly like it did at the Critics Choice Awards last year.

Aside from “Ted Lasso” and “Succession,” Jean Smart was named Best Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks,” while Lee Jung-jae was named Best Actor in a Drama Series for “Squid Game.”
