The family of Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger said in their first public statement on Sunday that they will stand by their son to “promote his presumption of innocence.”
Kohberger, who is 28 years old, was taken into custody on Friday at his family’s home in Pennsylvania. He is accused of stabbing to death four University of Idaho students on November 13.
On behalf of his parents and sister, Jason A. Labar, his lawyer, made the statement.
“We have fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies to try to find the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make wrong assumptions,” the family said.
The Kohberger’s said, “We will continue to let the legal process play out, and as a family, we will love and support our son and brother.”
The family told the four victims, students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, that “there are no words that can adequately express the sadness we feel, and we pray every day for them.”
The three family members wrote, “We respect privacy in this matter so that our family and the families who have lost someone can move forward through the legal process.”
Their statement comes after Labar said that Koberger “wants to be cleared of these charges as soon as possible.”
Kohberger, a Ph.D. student at Washington State University, is in Pennsylvania right now. He gave up his right to an extradition hearing and will soon be sent to Idaho.
Officials can legally release Kohberger’s probable cause affidavit once he shows up in court in Idaho. This should shed some light on what led to his arrest. The police said they think he did it on his own.
A SWAT team caught the accused murderer early Friday morning at his parents’ house in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania. He and his father had driven to Pennsylvania from Kohberger’s apartment in Pullman, Washington, which was only a few miles from the home in Moscow, Idaho, where the bodies of four University of Idaho students were found.
