In a blog article on CCS Insight, the analyst firm said that Apple could launch an iPad with a foldable screen in 2024 (a product they predict will be the first to market) and that it expects the tech giant to start experimenting with foldable technology soon. The article goes on to explain what “soon” means.
A new report says that Apple could release its first foldable device in 2024, but it might not be an iPhone. An analyst from CCS Insight told CNBC this week that the tech giant is more likely to release a foldable iPad.
“Right now, it doesn’t make sense for Apple to make a foldable iPhone,” said Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight, a company that has been following developments in the mobile communications sector for the last 30 years.
Wood said he thought Apple would avoid the trend of folding phones and instead “dip a toe in the water” with a foldable iPad.
This would give Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, a chance to try out foldable technology before going all in with a foldable iPhone. It would also “refresh” the iPad lineup.
The view of CCS Insight is in line with other reports that say Apple is working on a foldable device with a bigger screen than a smartphone. Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple leaker, said in February that the company is working on a 20-inch display “dual-screen, foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid” with two screens.
Ming-Chi Kuo, another analyst who has been right about many Apple predictions, said in April that he had thought Apple would release its first foldable device in the form of a smartphone as early as 2024, but that new information led him to think that the company might instead release a “foldable iPad or a hybrid of iPad and iPhone” in 2025, which is a year later than what CCS Insight is predicting.
Wood from CCS Insight also said that starting with a folding iPhone would be a “super high-risk” move for Apple because any hardware problems like those that plagued early versions of similar foldable devices made by competitors would hurt Apple’s reputation a lot. Wood says Apple’s first foldable phone could cost as much as $2,500, which is $900 more than the most expensive iPhone 14.
Wood said that mobile trends mean that Apple will have to come out with a foldable iPhone at some point, but that a larger foldable phone from the company is more likely to come out first.
