A little more than a week after a catastrophic vehicle accident in Los Angeles, Emmy Award-winning actress Anne Heche was “peacefully taken off life support” on August 14, according to The Associated Press.

The murkiness surrounding Anne Heche’s passing

Heche was pronounced “brain dead” on August 12 but was kept on life support for the purpose of organ donation. The Washington Post reports that due to peculiar circumstances, Heche was twice declared dead by the media.

According to Paul Farhi of The Washington Post, “between those dates, the 53-year-old actress was in a condition of mortal uncertainty that forced the media to parse a legal, even philosophical question: When is someone genuinely dead?

It’s not the first time that a celebrity’s passing has caused misunderstanding in general people. But Heche’s case was particularly peculiar since the definitions of what it means to be dead at the time of death and the date of death were in conflict.

The actress was declared legally dead in California on August 12, according to the Los Angeles Times and TMZ, but The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter waited until Heche was taken off life support on Sunday before reporting her death, Farhi pointed out.

Heche’s death date in Wikipedia as of Tuesday afternoon is simply August 2022.

According to a source close to the Heche family, they weren’t “mad at anyone” as a result of the circumstance, The Washington Post reported.

When you’re keeping a body alive to harvest its organs, it may get problematic, the insider told The Washington Post. But Anne had requested that. It is an element of her legacy.
