Authorities said on Wednesday that Josh Sills, a backup offensive lineman for the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles, has been charged with rape and kidnapping after an alleged incident in Ohio just over three years ago.
A grand jury in Ohio charged Sills on Tuesday. He wasn’t drafted, so he was on the inactive list when Philadelphia beat San Francisco to win the conference title on Sunday.
The rookie, who played at West Virginia and Oklahoma State, must go to court in Ohio on February 16, four days after the Super Bowl between the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
His lawyer, Michael Connick, said that the accusations were false and that Sills would be defended powerfully.
Sills is a backup guard, and he only played in one game this season. He has been on the inactive list for most of the year.
“The organization knows about the legal case Josh Sills is in.” We’ve talked to the League office and are now gathering more information. “At this time, we have nothing else to say,” the Eagles said.
Sills is on the NFL’s Commissioner Exempt List, which means he can’t practice, play, or travel with the Eagles.
The indictment says that Sills, who lives in Sarahsville, Ohio, had sexual contact with a woman without her permission and held her against her will in December 2019.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement that the incident was reported immediately and that the County Sheriff’s Office did a thorough investigation.
