An 18-year-old man died yesterday afternoon, January 17, after being stabbed in Ipswich. At 3:35 p.m., police got a call that a man had been stabbed on Westgate Street.
Armed police and a helicopter from the National Police Air Service were sent to look for the suspects in the area. Officers are looking for two men who were seen leaving the scene of the attack and may have been involved in it.
One suspect went in the direction of Providence Street, and the other was seen going in the direction of the Cornhill.
Around the crime scene, a part of Westgate Street is still closed off. The police also have more authority to stop and search people for up to 24 hours.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Connick of the Suffolk Constabulary said, “This was a brazen attack in the town centre, and anyone who saw it will have been very upset.” Even though the investigation is just starting, we think this was a targeted attack.

At 4:59 p.m., a section 60 authority was put into place for 24 hours. This gives officers more power to stop and search people.
Chapter 60 (Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994) Authorizations are different from normal stops and searches because they let officers search people without a good reason. This can only happen in a certain area for a certain amount of time if a senior officer thinks there is a chance of serious violence or if there are weapons involved.
