Federal Charges Filed Against Suspect In Paul Pelosi Attack: Paul Pelosi “is making steady progress on what will be a long rehabilitation process,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday. David DePape, 42, was charged with assault, attempted murder, and attempted kidnapping after last week’s break-in at the couple’s San Francisco home.

The US attorney for Northern California accused him of “attempted kidnapping of a US official.” According to an FBI document published Monday, DePape informed police he wanted to “keep hostage” Nancy Pelosi.

Tried kidnapping carries a maximum 20-year sentence. DePape was also charged with assaulting a US official’s family in retaliation. This charge purportedly involves Paul Pelosi and carries a 30-year maximum penalty.

The federal accusations against DePape are in addition to state charges, which include attempted murder, domestic burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false confinement of age, and threats to a public official and their family.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said DePape faces 13 years to life in jail. DePape’s arraignment is Tuesday.

DePape hit Pelosi twice, according to a source. Pelosi needed surgery for a skull fracture and suffered major injuries to his hands and right arm, a source added. The source stated Paul Pelosi was sleeping in boxer shorts and a pajama top when DePape broke in.
