After some villagers demanded $50,000 or they would “kill someone,” the Apple TV+ show “Lady in the Lake” was put on hold.

The upcoming limited series Lady in the Lake starring Natalie Portman had to stop filming as a result of threats from a Baltimore-based group.

The Baltimore Banner reported over the weekend that a group of locals approached a production driver on Friday and demanded $50,000 in exchange for “allowing” filming to go on. According to the Baltimore Police Department, the group threatened to “come back later this evening [and] shoot someone” if production went on despite the driver’s refusal to pay.

A department representative stated that the production team “decided to err on the side of caution and reschedule the shot when they identified another location.”

“Friday afternoon, on the Baltimore set of our production Lady in the Lake, prior to the arrival of the cast and crew… a driver on our production crew was confronted by two men, one of whom brandished a gun directed at our driver, and they then fled the location,” the production’s studio, Endeavor Content, wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. While the inquiry is underway, we are collaborating with the Baltimore Police Department. We are grateful that no one was hurt because the safety and security of our staff, cast, and everyone else involved in our productions are our top priority. Future production will resume with heightened security precautions. It has been an honor to collaborate with Baltimore’s lively community to film Lady in the Lake there.

The best-selling novel of the same name by Laura Lippman served as the basis for the film Lady in the Lake. An unsolved murder forces housewife and mother Maddie Schwartz (Portman) to reinvent herself as an investigative reporter in the 1960s Baltimore setting of the story. With Cleo Sherwood (Ingram Moses, who took the place of the previously announced Lupita Nyong’o in the production), who balances motherhood, many jobs, and a dedication to the city’s Black progressive agenda, she is now in direct competition.

After two cars drove through the production’s barricades while their occupants were firing weapons at each other in July, Justified: City Primeval on FX had to stop filming in Chicago.
