Virginia is on course to implement the new Californian limitations on the sale of gas-powered vehicles, despite having a Republican governor.
This week, the California Air Resources Board held the final hearing for the rule mandating that all new vehicles sold after 2035 be electric. The same plan calls for 35% of the state’s new automobile sales to be fossil-fuel-free by 2026.
Due to a 2021 law that former governor Ralph Northam signed tying Virginia to California’s pollution rules, the Golden State will follow Virginia’s lead.

A spokesperson for Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares’ office told Fox 5 DC that “Governor Northam and the far-left controlled General Assembly signed a law in 2021 binding Virginia to California’s emission vehicle regulations, which, among other things, bans the sale of gas-powered cars in Virginia by 2035.”
Added the spokesperson “The Attorney General hopes that the General Assembly will repeal this statute and halt any movement toward Californianization of Virginia. Bureaucrats from California who were not elected should not be imposing their will on Virginians.”

California’s pollution regulations are also adhered to by states like Washington and Massachusetts.
The California rule carries out Newsom’s executive order from September 2020, which sought to outlaw new gas and diesel vehicles by 2035.
