The magical marine animals swim into a new Netflix family animated film.
In “The Sea Beast,” voice actor Karl Urban plays monster hunter Jacob Holland, who must deal with runaway Maisie Brumble (Zaris-Angel Hator) onboard his prestigious ship while his team searches for a legendary whale. The unusual combination joins forces to venture into new territory and make history.
Chris Williams (“Moana,” “Big Hero Six”), an Academy Award-winning writer-director, is behind the latest family-friendly Netflix feature, which will be released on July 8. Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dan Stevens, and Kathy Burke star in the film, which was co-written by Nell Benjamin.
According to a recent interview with Variety, director Williams was inspired by (literally) images of sea animals from 16th and 17th-century maps. Jed Schlanger is producing “The Sea Beast,” which was revealed in 2018.

What is the plot of The Sea Beasts?
The Sea Beasts tell the story of a time when terrifying beasts screamed in the oceans, Monster Hunters were famous heroes, and no one was more revered than Great Jacob Holland, according to the film’s synopsis.
However, when brave Maisie Brumble sneaks aboard his ship, he’s saddled with an unwanted companion on a journey into the uncharted sea that will go down in history.
Who is the mastermind behind The Sea Beast?
The Sea Beast is written, directed, and produced by Chris Williams.
Since the late 1990s, the prolific director has primarily worked for Disney. Mulan was his debut production, and he worked as a story artist on it. Since then, he’s worked on some of Disney’s biggest blockbusters in various capacities.
He most recently worked as a co-director on Moana and directed Big Hero 6 in 2014.
When the film was first announced, Williams said, “Jacob and the Sea Beast” is “the kind of subject I’ve always wanted to tackle,” adding, “It’s a tale of grand adventure where our hero leaves the known world and journeys out into unexplored waters.” It just so happens that I’m doing the same thing.”
Since then, Netflix has posted a video of Chris Williams on its animation studio’s hub, NetflixAnimation.com (which we’ve included below), in which he discusses why he chose Netflix and his background in animation.

He claims in the video that he switched to Netflix because “it’s a place where people are getting to do the thing that they always wanted to make but never thought they’d get to make.”
In recent years, Netflix has been able to entice a number of creatives away from Disney. Williams is one of them. Ronnie Del Carmen (Inside Out), Nancy Kanter (Sofia the First), Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), Darla K. Anderson (Coco), Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins), Shion Takeuchi (Gravity Falls), and Alex Hirsch are among those who have switched to Netflix (Gravity Falls).
Jed Schlanger, a producer on the movie, has previously worked on Dreamworks films such as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Boss Baby.
Melissa Cobb, the Vice President of Netflix’s Kids and Family Entertainment, is mentioned as a producer, along with Christian Hejnal (Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse), who is listed as an associate producer, on IMDb.
A Cast of The Sea Beast
“The Sea Beast” will mostly feature Maisie Brumble, a young girl who embarks on a voyage in search of adventure. Zaris-Angel Hator will play Maisie, a young actress who doesn’t have a long resume but is sure to make a major splash. She was previously seen as Sally in the TV movie “The Midnight Gang.”
Despite the fact that Hator is a relative newbie to the industry, the voice cast will be filled with industry veterans. For instance, Karl Urban, who presently plays Billy Butcher on “The Boys,” will play Jacob Holland in the film. Dan Stevens, best known for his roles in “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Guest,” will also appear in an unnamed character.
Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Without a Trace”), and Kathy Burke round out the cast (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).
