Brendan Malone Career
Brendan Malone had a distinguished basketball career. He began working as a CYO basketball coach in Queens after graduating from Iona College. In 1967, he was hired as the junior varsity basketball coach at Power Memorial Academy. Because of his dedication to education, Malone earned a master’s degree in physical education from New York University in 1968.
He coached the varsity basketball team at Power Memorial from 1970 to 1976, winning two city titles, and was named “Coach of the Year” three times. He continued his coaching career at the university level, working with legendary head coach Jim Boeheim at Fordham, Yale, and Syracuse. From 1984 to 1986, Brendan was the head coach at the University of Rhode Island.
In the NBA, he began as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks in 1986 and later joined the Detroit Pistons, where he contributed to their NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. Brendan Malone was the first head coach of the Toronto Raptors in 1995-96, and he was recognized for his defensive techniques against basketball icon Michael Jordan.
