Tsonga was born in Le Mans on April 17, 1985, to a Congolese father, Didier Tsonga, and a French mother, Évelyne Tsonga. His father relocated to France in the 1970s to pursue his dream of being a professional handball player, where he met and married Évelyne. Because of his visual resemblance to boxing superstar Muhammad Ali, Tsonga is known as Ali.

Tsonga has a younger brother (Enzo) who, like Jo, was encouraged to participate in sports and is currently a member of the French basketball team (junior). He also has a younger sister (Sasha), who is less interested in sports.
