Ruben Studdard was born on September 12th, 1978, in Frankfurt, Germany. He began singing at the age of three, following his family’s resettlement to Birmingham, Alabama. He brought his mother to a nearby church, where he sang gospels and she sang in the choir.

He completed his education at Huffman High School. When he was younger, he was much more interested in American football than in music. Despite this, he was accepted to Alabama A&M University on a football scholarship.

He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Omicron Delta chapter at Alabama A&M University, from which he graduated in 2000. In 2015, his institution bestowed upon him an honorary Master of Arts degree.
