Portia Lee James DeGeneres, professionally known as Portia de Rossi, has been born Amanda Lee Rogers on January 31, 1973, in Horsham, Victoria, Australia.

Margaret, her mother, was a medical receptionist. Unfortunately, her father, Barry Rogers, died when she was just nine years old. De Rossi was raised in Grovedale, Victoria, and frequently modeled for print and television advertising as a child.

When she was fifteen years old, she took the stage name Portia de Rossi, inspired by the character Portia in William Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice.” She visited Geelong Grammar School and afterward studied law at the University of Melbourne.

De Rossi previously married Mel Metcalfe, a director, from 1996 until 1999. She has stated that a factor in her decision to stay in the relationship despite the fact that it was not working for her was her fear of being discovered as a lesbian, particularly as a young actress.
