Kenneth McGriff was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City, on September 19, 1960. He was the middle child of three, and his parents worked as city bus drivers. As a student at Catherine & Count Basie Junior High School, someone introduced him to the “Five Percent” sect of nation Islam.

Kenneth McGriff rose to prominence in early 1981 when he established his own crack cocaine manufacturing and distribution operation. He dubbed it “The Supreme Team,” and it was based in the Baisley Park Houses in Queens Borough’s South Jamaica neighborhood.
When McGriff became boss, the gang expanded to hundreds of members and took over the crack cocaine trade in Baisley Park, where McGriff grew up. McGriff was released on parole in early 1995, after serving nearly seven years of his sentence.
He chose to change his habits and started a barbershop near his parents’ house. He also began making arrangements to work in film, with the intention of adapting a crime novel by Donald Goines. McGriff met rappers and other urban singers and frequently looked out for their safety after becoming friends with hip-hop producer Irv Gotti.
