James Brolin was born Craig Kenneth Bruderlin in Los Angeles, California in 1940. His mother, Helen Sue, was a housewife, and his father, Henry, was a builder. He is the eldest of four siblings, the other three being a brother and two sisters.

Brolin started creating and flying model airplanes when he was ten years old. Later, in his mid-50s, as a teenager, he began recording with an 8mm camera. When Brolin met classmate and actor Ryan O’Neal, he had one of his formative experiences.
