Robert William Barker was born on December 12, 1923, in Darrington, Washington. On the U.S. Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940, he is recognized as an official member of the Sioux tribe, having spent much of his childhood on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota. He is an eighth-generation Sioux. His father was an electrical high line foreman, while his mother was a professor.

Barker was awarded a basketball scholarship to Drury College in Missouri (now Drury University). He joined the Sigma Nu fraternity’s Epsilon Beta chapter during his time there. He dropped out of college to join the US Navy as a military pilot during WWII, but the war ended before he could be assigned to a seagoing squadron. He went to college after the war and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Barker worked at Springfield’s KTTS-FM radio station throughout his undergraduate years. He subsequently relocated to Palm Beach, Florida, where he worked as a news editor and broadcaster for WWPG 1340 AM (now called WPBR in Lantana).

In 1950, he relocated to California, where he was granted his own radio show, “The Bob Barker Tv series,” which he hosted for 6 years in Burbank. Ralph Edwards, a game show producer, saw him while he was presenting a viewer event in California.

Barker then made the transition from radio to television, hosting “Truth or Consequences” in 1956. He was a part of the show till 1974.
