The Flash Movie Release Date, Cast, Plot & Everything We Know So Far

Although The Flash has appeared in numerous films such as The Lego Batman Movie and Justice League, Barry Allen has yet to direct his own picture. Until recently. The Scarlet Speedster is finally getting his opportunity to shine in a story that will take him to different dimensions and introduce old and new heroes.

After starring with other major DC heroes in Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League Extended Edition, Ezra Miller is donning the distinctive red and gold once more. It’s evident that this new plot will take the Flash in some unexpected directions, expanding the DC Extended Universe to new heights.

Yes, this is unrelated to the television show The Flash. However, due to some Speed Force shenanigans, Grant Gustin’s version of the speedster and Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen briefly met during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Now that that’s out of the way, here’s all we know about the upcoming film The Flash.

The Flash Movie Release Date

The Flash has a current theatrical release date of June 23, 2023. We’re crossing our fingers that it’s the real deal, considering the film has previously missed multiple deadlines.

Creative disputes and then the pandemic pushed it delayed — it was originally scheduled for release on March 18, 2018, and has had numerous 2022 release dates — but it now appears like next summer is a lock.

Small screens in the United States will view the film on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release.

The Flash Movie Expected Cast

Ezra Miller appeared to be set to repeat his role as Barry Allen in the DCEU for a long time, after making small appearances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad before starring in Justice League.

They also made an unexpected appearance in the DCEU drama Peacemaker’s conclusion lately. They were anticipated to play numerous versions of The Flash in the film, while many fans believe the second edition is actually Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash.

He’s Barry’s 31st-century arch-nemesis, and he’s so infatuated with him that he’s had plastic surgery to appear like him; yikes! Thawne is an important character in the Flashpoint plot in the comics, so incorporating him into the film in this way would be interesting.

However, due to recent conflicts, the future of The Flash and Ezra Miller’s tenure as the superhero may be jeopardized. The actor was detained twice in Hawaii between March and April, facing charges of disorderly behavior, harassment, and aggravated assault.

Fans are advocating for Grant Gustin, who plays The Flash in the Arrowverse, to replace Miller in the forthcoming film after Rolling Stone reported that Warner Bros. is holding “emergency discussions” over Miller’s future with the lucrative superhero franchise.

Miller’s work on The Flash solo movie is long over, according to CNET reporters, so if they were dismissed from DC, it would be more likely to affect future projects than The Flash movie. We may presume that the movie will go on as planned with Miller as the actor because Warner Bros. has made no public remark in the wake of Miller’s arrest.

The Flash Movie Expected Plot

Director Andy Muschetti indicated two years ago that the film would use aspects from the Flashpoint comic novel series (which relaunched the DC Comics universe back in 2011). It will also expose viewers to the DC cosmos while also acknowledging historical film timelines.

For those unfamiliar with the Flashpoint storyline, it depicts an alternate reality in which Cyborg (rather than Superman) is the world’s chosen hero, and Thomas Wayne is Batman. Barry Allen appears to be the only one who is aware of the distinctions between his chronology and this parallel one.

It’s a little murky territory, because Flashpoint was already explored in the third season of The CW’s The Flash, had its own animated film adaptation, and doesn’t seem to fit completely into the DCEU based on what we know — it would necessitate Justice League members playing significant roles, which we would have heard about by now if it were true (Batman being the exception).

A teaser released in late 2021 provides more information. Shots of The Flash outside his family house and approaching what looks to be his mother in the kitchen indicate it will follow the Flashpoint story of Barry stopping his mother’s death in the past, at least at first. Multiple Barry Allens, Bat people, and who knows what else arises from the consequent temporal shift (or possible parallel dimension screw up).

In this film, Batman plays an important role. Ben Affleck’s Batman will be “a very significant component of the emotional impact of the film,” according to Muschietti, and the teaser is loaded with the caped crusader’s calling cards. He can be found everywhere, from a decaying Wayne Manor and a waterfall-backed Batcave to a bloody cowl and a characteristic hooded silhouette.

Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s Bruce Waynes will appear in the film, although their specific roles have yet to be determined. Because Ben Affleck’s Batman was still a billionaire at the end of Justice League, the run-down pile in the teaser is most likely Wayne Manor from 1989’s Batman. The last “You in?” phrase from The Flash hints that the Dark Knight will be loyal to the numerous Flashes. Keaton also delivers a telling voice-over, referring to traveling to “any timeline, any world.”

We also know that the film will introduce Supergirl to the DCEU, setting the stage for her own standalone feature in 2024.

Given that Ezra Miller’s Flash has only appeared in films, it’s probable that there will be some mention to his origin tale here. This notion is supported by a shot of an industrial-looking room that could be S.T.A.R. Labs (where he received his superpowers).

There are still a lot of unknowns, as there always are. Many of the other photos in the teaser are tough to interpret at this point because of the time travel/parallel dimension possibilities. The Flash ring, the possibility of an alternative Flash (Jay Garrick), and was it the 1989 Batmobile under the tarp? To discover out, we’ll need more film.
