Stephen King’s novel “Firestarter” is being adapted into a new film. The fan-favorite horror story about a young girl endowed with extraordinary abilities who must flee the evil government has already spawned multiple media adaptations over the decades, from a 1984 film starring Drew Barrymore to a 2002 television miniseries sequel.
“Firestarter” even motivated the Duffer Brothers to create Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) for their hugely successful Netflix series “Stranger Things,” with a poster for the show depicting Eleven in a pose reminiscent of the 1984 film’s cover. Now, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Creations are reviving the classic tale with a new reboot.
Jason Blum is behind the new “Firestarter” film, having previously produced such contemporary scary masterpieces just like Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” and its sequel, “Us,” as well as David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” relaunch series, which recently concluded with 2021’s “Halloween Kills.”
Akiva Goldsman, whose prior credits include “A Beautiful Mind” and “I, Robot,” collaborated with Blum on “Firestarter.” Of course, any Stephen King adaptation has the potential to be truly great, so it’s understandable that fans who have been anticipating the new reboot are starting to wonder about the project’s details. The official release date to the cast and theatrical trailer here is everything we know about “Firestarter” thus far.
Firestarter Confirmed Release Date
It has been confirmed that Firestarter will be released on May 13, 2022, based on the recently published trailer. The film will be released in theatres, but it will also be released for streaming on Peacock the same day it is released.
The “Firestarter” revival made an unexpected casting move in bringing Zac Efron on board as Andy McGee, the father of a little girl named Charlie who possesses pyrokinesis, the power to produce very devastating bursts of fire with her mind.
Over the years, the former Disney Channel star has established himself as a nuanced and competent actor, and “Firestarter” will provide him another chance to dazzle moviegoers.
Meanwhile, Ryan Kiera Armstrong will portray Charlie, who previously starred in a minor part in another Stephen King adaption, “It: Chapter 2.” Sydney Lemmon joins the cast as Vicky, Charlie’s mother, and Tina Jung as Ms. Gardner, Charlie’s teacher.
Naturally, no film is complete without a villain, and Michael Greyeyes will portray John Rainbird, an assassin who is hired to stalk Charlie relentlessly and gets obsessed with killing her in the novel.
Greyeyes is a seasoned actress who has been in HBO’s crime drama “True Detective,” the 2019 horror movie “Blood Quantum,” and numerous more projects. Gloria Reuben will portray Captain Hollister, the head of the sinister government agency The Shop, and Kurtwood Smith will portray government psychologist Dr. Joseph Wanless.
A film’s score is a self-contained character, and in a triumphant twist of fate, famous director John Carpenter will compose the remake of “Firestarter.”
Carpenter, who director of ’80s horror masterpieces such as “They Live” and “The Fog,” was notably prevented from directing the original “Firestarter” film in 1984 following the box office failure of his Antarctic alien nightmare “The Thing.” However, “The Thing” has since established itself as one of the greatest science fiction horror films of all time, and Carpenter’s inclusion in the “Firestarter” reboot serves as a measure of karmic justice.
As a remake of the 1984 film, the storyline will be very similar… but with significantly improved special effects.
When his daughter Charlie (Armstrong) begins to show indications of developing pyrokinesis, Andy (Efron) must go to any length to protect her from a shadowy government entity known as “The Shop,” which is hell-bent on capturing her.
They’re interested in studying her because she was born with the capacity to make and manipulate fire, in contrast to her parents, who gained their abilities following an experimental drug test.
While both of her parents experience adverse effects when they are using their talents, Charlie is unscathed, which makes her a critical target for The Shop, the company that manufactured the medicine that granted individuals superpowers in the first place.
While the tale will almost certainly remain mostly unchanged from the novel and the 1984 film, director Keith Thomas will undoubtedly throw a few curveballs at the viewers to keep things fresh and intriguing.
