Wynonna Judd Was “Extremely Angry” About Her Mother Naomi’s Suicide

Wynonna Judd says that her late mother, Naomi Judd, killing herself makes her “extremely angry.”

In her first interview since her mother, country music star Naomi, died by suicide at age 76 in April, Wynonna told CBS Sunday Morning that she is still sad about losing her.

Wynonna, 58, told reporter Lee Cowan, “I got the call, I went over, I saw her, and I said goodbye to her in the hospital.” She then said she was “angry” about her mom’s choice.

“I shut her eyes, kissed her on the head, and that was the end of it. The next thing I knew, I was sitting on the side porch trying to figure out what to do next.”

Wynonna went on, “I didn’t know she was where she was when she ended it, because she had episodes before and got better afterward. And that’s where I live. I’m always thinking, “Should I have looked for something or known something?” I didn’t.”

Wynonna told Cowan, “No, I don’t think so, not for a while,” when he asked her if the anger ever goes away. Wynonna said that even though her mother has been dead since April 30, she can still feel her presence.

“I feel her nudging me. I sometimes laugh, too. I sometimes say, “I miss you a lot. Why aren’t you here so we can fight?'” Wynonna said.

“She once took my hand and told me, ‘Because of you, my life is better.'” More and more of these memories are starting to come back. I think a lot of that crap goes away when you lose your mother because it doesn’t matter anymore. It just doesn’t.”

Wynonna will soon go on a tour that The Judds would have done together. The mother and daughter duo sold more than 20 million albums, had 14 singles reach number one, and won five Grammy Awards.

“As I walk out on stage that first night, I’ll probably say something like, ‘It’s not supposed to be like this,’ because it’s not. We’re supposed to do it together. Wynonna said, “I’m going to be mad because she’s not there.”

The country star also said that after their mother died, she and her sister Ashley Judd put their differences aside.

“We look at each other kind of like, ‘I’ve got you,’ right? And each of us looks at the other and says, “Yeah.” Right now, I think we’re closer together than we’ve been in a long time.”

The Nashville medical examiner’s office said in Naomi’s autopsy report that she “seemed to have shot herself in the head” and was “pronounced dead shortly after arriving” at a local hospital.
