BBC presenter’s ‘severe and relentless’ pain explained

Kirsty Young, a BBC presenter, will host the broadcaster’s coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, after coming out of retirement to present the channel’s coverage of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.

This is the first time the actress has worked since taking a hiatus in 2018 due to “severe and relentless” pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. In an interview with The Times, Kirsty stated: “I was experiencing severe joint pain. I’d wake up with the sensation that I had glass in my joints.”

“I couldn’t walk up the stairs without coming to a halt in the middle. It’s as if someone had drugged me, as if you’d taken a sleeping pill at the wrong time of day and were completely out of it “She went on.
Kirsty said the pain was so severe that she couldn’t even lift a water bottle. In 2018, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which triggered her secondary condition, fibromyalgia.

Because fibromyalgia causes your pain threshold to malfunction, even the slightest knock can cause excruciating pain. “You feel pain in such a heightened way,” she says.

Kirsty’s medical conditions required her to take a break from her career, as rest is essential for pain relief. “It was difficult to walk away,” Kirsty said of her decision to leave her job as host of the iconic radio show Desert Island Discs.

Kirsty commented on her decision to host the Platinum Jubilee celebrations: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We’ll never see it again, at least not in our lifetimes, if ever, so I couldn’t resist.”

What ailment is Kirsty Young suffering from?

Back in 2018, Kirsty stated she would be leaving Desert Island Discs “for a number of months” to receive treatment for a specific type of fibromyalgia.

There is pain in every part of the body when someone has fibromyalgia. People with the chronic illness experience severe musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep problems, memory loss, and mood swings.

Additionally, in 2018, rheumatoid arthritis was identified in her.

‘Having been forced to take some months away from my favorite job due to health problems, I’m happy to say I’m now well on the way to feeling much better,’ she said in a July 2019 announcement that she would step down as the host.

I’ve decided it’s time to take on new challenges because my perspective on what I should do next has been altered by my forced absence from the show.
