The Callisto Protocol

Last Updated 2 months Ago

The Callisto Protocol is a spiritual sequel to Dead Space. Here’s what we know about it.

The Callisto Protocol’s release date and a new gameplay trailer were both shown at Sony’s latest State of Play event. The upcoming survival horror game from Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space, was first announced at the Game Awards in 2020. It takes place on Jupiter, and while it used to be connected to the world of PUBG: Battlegrounds, it is now a separate game.

The Callisto Protocol is described as being story-driven and played from a third-person perspective. We might learn more about it at E3 2022 (keep an eye on our E3 2022 schedule), but for now, here’s everything we know about it.

The Callisto Protocol Release Date

On December 2, 2022, The Callisto Protocol will be released. Striking Distance Studios debuted in the middle of 2019. If the December release date is accurate, which it appears to be, that would be a quick turnaround for a newly established studio—albeit one with a great deal of track record in the genre.

The Callisto Protocol Gameplay

Dead Space fans should be ecstatic at this first peek at gameplay from The Callisto Protocol(opens in new tab). It features your typical heavy, thudding protagonist, deformed alien-human hybrids hiding in dimly light space corridors, and high-recoil weapons for blasting off enemy extremities. One of those is the Callisto Protocol, even down to the graphic death animations.

The 3rd combat in The Callisto Protocol seems to be prioritized, with both melee and shooting options, with all the expected dramatic gore. Cutting off limbs is a useful tactical move, as is employing The Grip, a gravity weapon, to launch adversaries into danger zones. Otherwise, it is unclear what types of mechanics are involved in all that splattering. It will belong to the survival horror school of “yes, you can shoot the enemies, but we’re not going to make it easy,” if the obvious Dead Space comparisons hold true.

Platforms For The Callisto Protocol

PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and PC have been listed as the game’s platforms thus far. However, there is a potential that Callisto Protocol may end up on Google’s streaming service because the game is published by Krafton, the company behind PUBG and who also put the battle royale on Stadia. Since December 2 is still a ways off, we have more time to explore the enigmatic history of this horrific new world.

What Is The Callisto Protocol Story?

The setting of this game takes place in the year 2320 on the titular Callisto, a dead moon of Jupiter. You take on the role of Jacob Lee in it, a cargo ship pilot imprisoned in Black Iron Prison. Your objective is to escape from jail while learning the sinister truth about the United Jupiter Company.

The game centers around horrifying creatures and a conspiracy that is taking place in the ominous and perilous Black Iron Prison on the moon Callisto. Story information is scarce at this point because we only have a teaser and a few interviews to go on. But what is certain is that the game will be narrative-focused and third-person.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Schofield claims that a game like this is important because of its mystery. “What awaits you around the next bend? Why is that door closed? I believe it was a nice balance between showing just enough and keeping some aspects, such as our mechanics, characters, and plot – particularly a significant portion of the tale – remain secret so that we can reveal them more as the game progresses, you know? We must leave certain questions for the audience to answer.”

We now know that the protagonist of Callisto is a man named Jacob Lee who has the power to push and pull objects according to a recent edition of Game Informer(which opens in a new tab), which provided more screenshots and information about the game. The Transformers actor Josh Duhamel will play Jacob, according to the official Twitter account (opens in new tab).

“The objective of the game is to help players escape the high-security Black Iron Prison and learn its horrifying mysteries, according to the game’s official website. The game seeks to raise the bar for horror in interactive entertainment with its combination of horror, action, and immersive storyline.”

The Callisto Protocol No Longer Exists In The Larger Pubg World

The Callisto Protocol is set in the same fictitious chronology as PUBG, it was first made known. What is the cause of this? The corporation that created the popular battle royale game is the publisher of Callisto Protocol.

Despite taking place 300 years in the future, this Jupiter-set horror game will have “small ties here and there,” according to Schofield, and this improbable lore building will “make more sense after the game is released.”

But Schofield later clarified in a Tweet(opens in a new tab) that this is no longer the case in May 2022. In the statement, Schofield explained that Callisto had developed into its own realm and is “its own story and world” that “no longer requires place in the PUBG universe.”

The Callisto Protocol Trailer?

The Callisto Protocol’s initial gameplay trailer was released during a crazy teaser as part of the June 2022 State of Play event by Krafton and Striking Distance Studios. You may watch it below.
