It has been more than a decade since the end of The Wire, but David Simon is returning to the city of Baltimore, this time to star in a real crime thriller about the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF).
We Own This City is based on the true story of the GTTF corruption scandal, which was extensively covered in Baltimore Sun journalist Justin Fenton’s non-fiction book of the same name.
In order to develop the new HBO show, Simon and his frequent working partner George Pelecanos recruited several members of The Wire’s creative team, as well as several of the show’s cast, from their previous work on the show.

We Own This City Synopsis
It looks at the corruption and moral collapse that occurred in a city in the United States when drug prohibition and mass arrest practices were promoted at the expense of actual police operations.
We Own This City plot
According to HBO, the plot of We Own This City is as follows:
“We Own This City, based on the book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, as well as the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city where drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.”
For those who are unfamiliar with the Gun Trace Task Force scandal, it involves nine Baltimore Police Department officers who spent three years terrorizing city residents, according to the Baltimore Sun. According to Vox, cops were supposed to be removing guns and violent criminals from city streets. Instead, they committed robberies, conducted warrantless searches, worked overtime for the city, and even carried fake guns to plant in the event that they shot unarmed people.
The former police officers involved usually targeted suspected criminals, believing that if they tried to report the police corruption, their words would be dismissed. Furthermore, the disgraced officers committed all of their crimes in order to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars.
