Unforgotten, the popular British television series, will return to our screens very soon for Unforgotten season 5. Season 4 concluded with the unexpected death of Nicola Walker’s character, DCI Cassie Stewart, leaving fans heartbroken and in tears. Cassie was one of the series’ main characters, and her death has left fans wondering how the plot will continue without her. Many questioned whether this was the unfortunate end to the critically acclaimed investigative series.

Unforgotten Season 5 Plot
Unforgotten’s fifth season begins just before DCI Jessica James’ first day on the job, when an unexpected and tragic tragedy occurs in her personal life. Despite this, Jessica is eager to make a good first impression on her new coworkers; however, will Jessica be in the right frame of mind to fit in and motivate the team?
The spectre of beloved former colleague Cassie Stuart looms large over the team, and Jess is well aware that she will be filling big shoes. She will need determination, professionalism, and a great attitude if she is to live up to her much-admired and respected predecessor.

Sunny’s personal life will be explored further as he and the crew deal with Cassie’s death, according to writer Chris Lang.
Sunny’s girlfriend Sal, whom the detective proposed to in the season 4 finale, may be revealed more. “We’ll find out a lot more about her,” Lang told PBS Masterpiece. “There’s a plot there, and I wanted to do it anyway, but it’s fascinating how much the audience responds to your two characters’ problems.”
“I believe people enjoy such things, and I enjoy writing them, so I’ve tried to make more room in this season for our two characters’ personal lives, particularly his new partner’s.” There’s an important personal story here.” Lang also teases the possibility of seeing more of Cassie’s family and how her father’s ongoing dementia battle plays out. “A part of me doesn’t want to let them go, and I believe there are natural ways for them to stay with us.” But the problem with this show is that I always want to put in a lot more material than there is space for…”
We anticipate that the format will be similar to the previous season, but this time DI Sunny will be assisted in solving murder cold cases by a new colleague.

Sanjeev Bhaskar from The Kumars at No. 42 will return in series four as much-loved DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan.
Unfortunately, Walker will not be returning after her character, DCI Cassie Stuart, died tragically at the end of series four.
Walker will be replaced by Sinéad Keenan, who will play DCI Jessica James in Unforgotten.
Walker recently revealed in an interview with TV Insider that killing off her character had been planned since season 3.
“We talked a lot about where it was going after Season 3, and it was a joint decision. I believe the hints were present in Season 3 “She stated.
“Unforgotten is the title of the show, and I believe this woman has a lot of narrative beauty. She will not be forgotten. Because she was a real person, I felt she was very unusual on television.”
Delighted @ITV has recommissioned @UnforgottenTV & more of @ChrisLangWriter’s fab writing. I’ll continue to watch & learn from #NicolaWalker as I’ve done these past 5 years, glowing with pride as my friend excels in everything she does. She’s a personal & national treasure 🙏🏽♥️

Jordan Long (DS Murray Boulting), Lewis Reeves (DC Jake Collier), Carolina Main (DS Fran Lingley), Georgia Mackenzie (Dr. Leanne Balcombe), and Pippa Nixon (DC Karen Willetts) will all reprise their roles as Sunny’s police colleagues in the upcoming series, as will Sunny’s now-fiancé Sal (Michelle Bonnard).
It’s unclear whether Cassie’s father Martin (Peter Egan), her son Adam (Jassa Ahluwalia), her partner John (Alastair Mackenzie), or Martin’s partner Jenny (Janet Dibley) will visit Sunny after Cassie’s death – but perhaps they’ll stop by the station to say hello?
There has also been no word on new cast members who will play the suspects, victims, and relatives in Sunny’s latest case. However, based on previous seasons’ stellar casts and the huge success of series four, we expect high-profile actors to be vying for these roles.
Where To Watch Unforgotten Season 5
The series is currently available on ITV Hub and the fifth season is also expected to release on ITV Hub.
About The Previous Season
Season 4’s dramatic series finale revealed that Dean Bartseas (real name Dean Quinn) murdered Matthew Walsh in the 1990s. While Ram Sidhu (Phaldut Sharma) recognised Matthew as the person who had beaten him up and sexually assaulted Fiona (Liz White) a few weeks before and began chasing him, Dean was the first to find Matthew, who’d tripped in an allotment and hit his head on a short brick wall, knocking himself out.
Dean, who had tried to avoid his family’s ties to crime by changing his last name and training as a cop, recognised Walsh as the rival gang member who’d killed his supportive older brother Stephen and decided to avenge his death by stabbing Walsh through his wound with an engraved fountain pen his brother had given him.
While Dean was arrested in connection with Walsh’s death, Ram, an expectant father, was facing prison time after being charged with preventing the lawful burial of a body (along with Liz and Fiona), as well as his involvement in Dean’s cocaine smuggling operation. Fiona was facing an additional charge for falsifying her therapy licence, while Liz was forced to resign from the police force as a result of her charges.
Despite the team’s success in locating Walsh’s murderer, the finale ended on a tragic note, with DCI Cassie Stewart’s surgery revealing that she had suffered serious brain damage in the aftermath of her car accident and was unlikely to recover fully. Sunny later delivers a eulogy at her funeral and visits her grave with flowers after we learn of her death.
