The San Francisco 49ers said Monday that quarterback Trey Lance had successful surgery on his injured right ankle and should be fully healed for the 2023 season.

In a statement, the team said, “Lance had surgery at Stanford Hospital to fix two injuries to his ankle: a broken fibula and a torn ligament.” “Lance will start rehab, and the head team doctor, Dr. Tim McAdams, is sure that he will be fully healed by the 2023 season so that he can play again.”

Lance later posted a message on social media with a photo of himself after surgery. In it, he thanked everyone for “all the messages and prayers” and said that the surgery went well.

Lance broke his ankle in the first quarter of the 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The QB got hurt when he tried to run up the middle and was tackled. Lance was taken off the field with an air cast on his right leg.

This is a terrible end to the season for the former first-round pick, who was supposed to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback in 2022.

Lance started 16 games as a sophomore at North Dakota State. In 2020, he only played in one game, but the 49ers still picked him with the third overall pick in 2021. Lance started his first two games as a rookie when Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt and couldn’t play. In 2022, he only played for less than five quarters before getting hurt.

After renegotiating his contract to stay with the team, Garoppolo is now the full-time starter in San Francisco. The Niners, who have a team that could make the playoffs, are glad Jimmy G stayed in town.
