While it’s felt like a high-society battlefield for the past 10 episodes, there have been cutting looks, polite disdain, and social invitations being held hostage instead of sharp swords in exchange for attention.
The Russells’ ascent to the top of society has not been a straightforward process. Among the many challenges, they’ve faced are threats to their reputation and accusations of manslaughter, but the worst of all (and we do mean worst) is that they’ve been snubbed all over town, including right outside their own door. The embarrassment.
With their wit and cunning, the ruthless married couple George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) have nestled themselves into a position they believe they are deserving of – but will they be able to maintain their grip on the throne?
Season two will have a lot to answer for, not only about the Russells but also about poor Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), who spent the final episode of season one searching for her kidnapped daughter. How long will Marian (Louisa Jacobson) be able to recover from Mr. Raikes’ denial? But, perhaps more scandalously, will Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) be successful in tricking the young Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) into marrying him solely for the purpose of concealing his homosexuality from the general public?
Here’s everything we know about the second season of The Gilded Age.
The Gilded Age Season 2: Potential HBO Release Date
Even though we have run out of fancy butlers who can deliver the good news to you, we are extremely pleased to announce that The Gilded Age has been renewed for a second season on Showtime.
According to HBO, the announcement will be made in February 2022. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice president of programming, said in a statement (as reported by Town and Country):
‘Julian Fellowes and the entire Gilded Age family have completely enthralled us with their story of late-nineteenth-century New York City extravagance.’
“Together with our partners at Universal Television, we couldn’t be more excited about embarking on a season two journey with this extraordinarily talented group of people.”
It’s too soon to tell when the much-anticipated second season will arrive on our television screens. The first season of the show premiered in January 2022, and while a year’s worth of production is standard in the industry, something this extravagant may take a little longer. We’ve Expected in the spring of 2023 in our (social) calendars.
In more encouraging news, the writers have already begun their labor of love, turning ink into gold.
In fact, they were already contemplating the show’s future before the decision to renew it for a second season was made official.
“The reality is that we’re always working on the second season-long before we know whether or not the show will be renewed,” executive producer Gareth Neame told Radio Times.
For the simple reason that the moment we know we’re going ahead, we have to get started – the cameras have to start rolling. As a result, you’ll have to do some preliminary planning.”
“As a result, we’ve already begun brainstorming ideas for the second season,” he explained.
The Gilded Age Season 2 Cast
Of course, we’re talking about the Russells. It’s hard to imagine The Gilded Age without Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector at the helm, but that’s exactly what happened.
We would also anticipate that Louisa Jacobson would reprise her role as Marian Brook, as she is one of the main characters in the film.
Christine Baranski has already expressed her interest in reprising her role as the formidable Mrs. Agnes van Rhijn, as reported by Town and Country: “I’m interested in reprising my role as the formidable Mrs. Agnes van Rhijn.” “We’re all hoping it continues in the future. I could definitely see myself continuing with this show and with these actors, as well as with Julian, who is a fantastic writer in his own right.”
Scheduling, on the other hand, may prove difficult, as she acknowledged:
“Unfortunately, as a result of COVID and other factors, if the Gilded Age does reappear, it will be in parallel with the current one. I may be filming two shows at the same time, but this is what you call a Champagne problem in Hollywood.”
The following members of the cast are expected to return:
- Denée Benton in the role of Peggy Scott
- Cynthia Nixon in the role of Mrs. Ada Brook
- The role of Miss Gladys Russell is played by Taissa Farmiga.
- Larry Russell is played by Harry Richardson.
- Blake Ritson in the role of Oscar van Rhijn
- Claybourne Elder in the role of John Adams
- Katie Finneran in the role of Anne Morris
- Thomas Cocquerel in the role of Tom Raikes
- Ben Ahlers in the role of Jack Treacher
- Taylor Richardson in the role of Bridget
- Kelli O’Hara in the role of Aurora Fane
- Kelley Curran in the role of Miss Turner
- Mrs. Sylvia Chamberlain is played by Jeanne Tripplehorn.
The Gilded Age Season 2 Plot
According to director Salli Richardson-Whitfield (via Town and Country), “there are all sorts of ideas and dreams [for new storylines]” that have been floating around in their heads.
Given the Russells’ high regard for success, it is likely that a new obstacle will arise to jeopardize their newfound position. In light of this, a storyline centered on Mr. Russell’s ambitions to construct an electrically powered train line could be developed.
We doubt Mrs. Russell will be spared from dealing with Gladys’ unsuitable suitors (ahem, Oscar), and we doubt her battle with the toffs will be over for good.
In the event that Turner returns, she may pursue her ambition to win Mr. Russell’s affections; however, it is impossible to predict where this will leave George and Bertha.
A lot of people think that Peggy will never stop looking for her long-lost child. Furthermore, Miss Marian Brook is unlikely to remain heartbroken for an extended period of time, especially given the fact that her budding friendship with Larry Russell appears to be growing stronger.
There’s a chance that this will be the season in which Marian truly comes into her own. The fact that her love affair with Mr Raikes seemed to be the only storyline of substance in season one would be fantastic if she could progress beyond her shopping sprees for new gloves and wandering around the van Rhijn estate.
Beyond that, we’ll be on the lookout for any additional concrete clues, so keep checking back.
