‘The Batman’ 2022 Box Office Predictions and Review – Will ‘The Batman’ Beat Spider-Man: No Way Home?

After Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home shattered box office records and created a gravitational pull toward theatres with a global total of $1.85 billion, Warner Bros.’ The Batman is hoping to keep the big screen rally going.

Industry estimates put the Robert Pattinson film’s domestic box office at $115 million to 125 million dollars, with another $110 million to 120 million dollars expected internationally, for a total worldwide box office of $225 million to $245 million dollars. The picture, which cost $200 million to make, is Warner Bros.’ return to pure theatrical releases after implementing a day-and-date HBO Max strategy for its U.S. film portfolio, which began with Wonder Woman 1984 in December 2020.

As a first step, Spider-Man has always been better known than Batman. I think the $1 billion-plus gross of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were lightning in a bottle moments. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy made more money than the Batman movies from 1989 to 1997 ($1.252 billion). In Nolan’s trilogy, the idea of a big comic book movie that looked like a genre movie or a big city crime thriller was new. People use this as a marketing ploy all the time: “It’s an action movie, but it also has a lot of xyz.” No Way Home was also the next MCU event, the third MCU Spider-Man movie, a metaphorical Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a metaphorical Spider-Man 4 all in one. It’s playing like The Force Awakens because it tapped into that kind of nostalgia for people of all ages. Fair or not, The Batman is just a new Batman movie, no matter how good it is.

Two more: It’s not likely that any big Hollywood movie outside of Fast & Furious will do well in China now, so we shouldn’t expect anything from them. Second, most of the Batman movies have been made in the United States or close to it. The Dark Knight Rises earned 41% of its money domestically, while Dawn of Justice earned 37%. The six live-action modern Batman movies that came before that earned more here than “there.” Aquaman cost about $165 million and Batman vs. Superman cost $250 million, so The Batman doesn’t have to make as much money as the Joker ($1.073 billion without China) to make money, which is good news. Good movies like Doctor Strange ($677 million) or Guardians of the Galaxy ($774 million) will be enough if they make people want to see more.

WB’s marketing campaign is coming to an end, and we can’t say they haven’t done everything possible to make it seem like the next big movie. There are going to be a lot of big questions at the start of the review. Is this good? Is it child-friendly? Is it enough of a change from Batman Begins to make it worth seeing? Is it worth the 175-minute runtime? We should keep in mind that a lot of people saw and loved Batman Begins in weekend four, five, and six. It doesn’t matter if The Batman opens for less than $150 million. I’d expect it to have legs. There is one thing we can all agree on: We hope Jason Kilar’s boasting about when the show will be on HBO Max wasn’t like lighting a match to complain about the fire. Bob Chapek may not have wanted us to talk about Bruno, but I’m pretty sure Toby Emmerich would rather we talked about Penguin right away.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight made a record $158 million in its first weekend in 2008. Its direct follow-up, The Dark Knight Rises, came out in 2012 and made $160 million in its first weekend. It took a while for Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to get off the ground, but it made $166 million in its first weekend. In 2019, director Todd Phillips’ solo Joker movie almost made $100 million.

I think Reeves’ new movie is inspired by Joker, which became the highest-grossing R movie of all time, with more than $1 billion in ticket sales around the world. The Batman was originally planned to be part of the ongoing DC Extended Universe. Ben Affleck, who was going to star in the movie, said he didn’t want to be in it.

If the movie does well, Warner Bros. plans to make two spinoff series for HBO Max, one about the Gotham City Police Department and one about a Scarface-style crime storey led by Farrell’s Penguin, both of which will be based on the movie. Two movie sequels are also in the works.

In the case of HBO Max, the studio has to deal with the fallout from its decision to show all of its 2021 movies on streaming at the same time. Because of this, some high-profile movies didn’t do very well at the box office, like The Matrix Resurrections, The Suicide Squad, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. As long as you don’t want to watch it right away, you don’t have to. It will be available on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release.

Batman, which also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin, comes out on Friday. Collider is a good place to stay up to date on box office news.
