Superman: Legacy, the first installment in the relaunched DC Universe, has begun to receive new details, including a release date and a start date for filming. After becoming co-CEOs of DC Studios in November 2022, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran unveiled their initial plans for the DC Universe on January 31, 2023.
Gunn’s new plan will grow the cinema, television, and animation franchise when The Flash resets the DC Universe. It will begin with Creature Commandos, Waller, and the new DCU’s first feature film, Superman: Legacy, in which a new actor will play the Man of Steel.
The anticipation for Gunn’s upcoming Superman: The Legacy film has increased as a result of the success of his most recent Marvel Studios film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This follows the contentious announcement that Henry Cavill wouldn’t be playing Superman again because Gunn wanted to concentrate on a younger version of the character.
Since Max Fleischer’s animated shorts in the 1940s, Superman has been a mainstay of cinema, but Superman: Legacy will tell a brand-new tale for the Man of Steel, carrying on the Legacy of the character that Gunn considers to be “a huge priority, if not the biggest priority” for DC Studios (via Twitter).
Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.

Superman Legacy Release Date
Superman: Legacy is the only upcoming DCU project with a confirmed debut date, with the other two streaming series, Waller and Creature Commandos, receiving an approximate 2024 release window. The publication date of Superman: Legacy is July 11, 2025, giving Gunn and the DC team plenty of time to polish the most recent Man of Steel tale. He recently tweeted:
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

Superman Legacy Trailer Info
Superman: Legacy won’t start shooting until January 2024. Therefore there isn’t a trailer or first-look image available yet. James Gunn announced on Twitter on May 13, 2023, that only one person has been officially cast in Superman: Legacy so far. As a result, fans will have to wait much longer for official photos or marketing materials.
For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like @GlennHowerton or @ZacharyLevi having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top…

It’s probable that the first trailer for Superman: Legacy may debut somewhere in early 2025, though a teaser could always arrive earlier.
Why Isn’t Henry Cavill Coming Back as Superman?
Although we don’t know who will play him in Superman: Legacy, Henry Cavill is not a contender. In the films Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Black Adam, the British actor who wore the Kryptonian cape has formally vacated the role.
In December 2022, Gunn tweeted an update on the Superman reboot, saying:
“In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

We don’t yet know which other characters might show up in Legacy. We can anticipate seeing new iterations of Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, and Lois Lane because the movie is rumored to focus on Clark Kent’s early years at the Daily Planet.
