Spider-Man: Tom Holland Regrets Not Calling Andrew Garfield, Sony Angry With Holland

Spider-Man No Way Home has been out in theaters for some time now, but the attention towards its protagonist shows no sign of waning. The interviews given by the young actor are no longer counted. After declaring his hope for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his regret, which also involves his colleague. Tom Holland said he regretted not contacting Andrew Garfield when he landed the role of Spider-Man.

The performer of the late Peter Parker is remembered when he landed the role:

“Looking back, one thing I can think about with a little more clarity and regret is never having called Andrew Garfield when I was cast in Spider-Man. If someone had told me that after my second movie this other guy would take my place, it would have broken my heart.”

Tom Holland then went on to say he wished he had the opportunity to apologize to Andrew Garfield. Eventually, this opportunity came thanks to the Spider-Man movie No Way Home, for which he is extremely grateful:

“It wasn’t just an opportunity for him to make peace with his character and the studio, but also for him and me to have a moment to realize that we could share this. His look when he rescues Zendaya is totally genuine and I am very proud of him.”

In the same interview, Tom Holland also wanted to thank both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire from the bottom of his heart for their participation in the film. The ability to reunite the three Spider-Man has meant so much to all three.

Holland Had Trouble With Sony

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is one of the most successful films of the last year not least because of the grandiose portrayal of Tom Holland as the eponymous character.  Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland got into some trouble with studios Sony and Marvel during the film’s press tour.

But even without him, the film is a pure festival for fans, as it combines three “Spider-Man” in a single story: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were allowed to fight side by side with Holland against the greatest “Spider-Man” villains. “No Way Home” was funny, dramatic, emotional and also quite brutal on several levels, as Holland himself never tired of pointing out while touring the press for the film.

This, in turn, did not please the decision-makers at Sony and Marvel at all! While it is already known that Sony didn’t initially want Holland for the role of “Spider-Man”, some employees of the studio probably saw themselves confirmed at that moment that Holland wasn’t a good choice.

“It Doesn’t Sell”

In an interview with THR, the actor opened up about a call from Marvel and Sony after Holland repeatedly described Spider-Man: No Way Home as “brutal.” “They called me and said, ‘Stop saying the movie is brutal. Stop saying the movie is emotional. That doesn’t sell the film well.”

Holland stood by his statements and described the film during the phone call as the “most emotional superhero film of all time”.

But it was important to Sony and Marvel that he put in the foreground how funny the film was. “It’s funny, but it’s also kind of heartbreaking” was Holland’s reply. From then on, he was forced to change the way he promoted the film. “But I’m glad I was able to at least warn a few people,” says the actor.

Spider-Man: No Way Home emerged as the biggest film of the year, something that the complete movie industry was waiting for quite some time especially due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
