Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 14 Episode 13 “The Ross Matthews Roast” Recap
When Bosco unwrapped the golden chocolate bar on the main stage last week, he finally revealed what it was made of after losing the lip-sync competition to Gorgeous following a terrible lead performance in this season’s musical. After a slew of theories about who might have been in possession of the gold bar was tossed around, we can now put this chapter behind us and go on with the rest of this (very long) season. But the tuba sound effect that played after the melancholy “it’s chocolate” comment at the end of each episode will be sorely missed by me. This week, the dolls are putting on a roast, and it’s time to find out who the true comic queens are amongst them.
In this week’s episode, we find ourselves in the work room after the Bosco saves the day with a gold bar. Bosco is relieved to still be in the running for the championship. Despite their joy at receiving the gold chocolate bar, the queens express their dissatisfaction with the decision to revoke their immunity during confessionals. Willow inquires of Bosco as to how she feels about everyone addressing her by her given name. Bosco said she has no ill will toward the situation and understands that it is a necessary element of the game. She congratulates Lady Camden on her victory in the major challenge, and the queens are allowed to leave their costumes.
On the following day, the work room is still crowded with seven females in attendance. The queens gather around the table and make the observation that Jorjeous is the season’s lip-sync assassin. Ru walks into the room and informs us that we will be having visitors this week. The queens are escorted to a secondary venue for the mini-challenge, which is hosted by Norvina from Anastasia Beverly Hills. The queens will be divided into two groups and will have 30 minutes to paint gigantic murals of Ru and Dolly Parton’s faces on the walls of the arena. A half-hour of frenetic painting later, the murals are, without a doubt, in place. Team Dolly (Willow, Bosco, Lady Camden, and Daya) has been crowned the champions, according to Norvina.
Afterward, Ru informs the ladies that this week’s maxi challenge will be an old-fashioned roast. Their theme for this season is Judge Ross Matthews, and the mini-challenge team that wins will get to choose the sequence in which they will be roasted. The winning team deliberates over the order, and everyone receives the spot they desired, so there are no objections from the losing team. Everyone begins composing their jokes, and Willow confides in Lady C that she is quite apprehensive about this assignment. Nobody’s jokes are really hitting the mark at this level of the writing process, so it will be interesting to see how they workshop them with the comedy coaches Michelle and Dolcé Sloan. During their rehearsals, a lot of the queens don’t get any laughs, which is a little concerning. There’s nothing worse than attending a roast and not hearing any amusing jokes. Everyone, understandably, is apprehensive about the upcoming struggle. Backstage, Jorjeous is dejected after the practice, which has the other queens feeling a similar manner as she is.
It’s elimination day, and the queens are gearing up for their first roast of the season. Jorgeous is still suffering from his illness and is woefully underprepared for the assignment. Ru presents the panel of judges for this week’s show, which includes Michelle, Ross, and comedian Dulcé Sloan, on the main stage. The roast begins with Bosco’s opening number, which is…decent and serves as a strong first act. Jorgeous’s set was mediocre at best, but it wasn’t a complete disaster. Willow, as well as Angeria, generate a great deal of laughter. Daya’s set is mediocre, and Deja’s performance is mediocre, but Lady Camden brings the roast to a close on a high note. The theme for the runway show is “tutu much,” and the queens are dressed in their best ballerina-inspired lewks as they strut down the catwalk.
The judges begin their critiques with Bosco, telling her that she possessed a commanding stage presence and understood how to frame up her gags well. Michelle compliments her on her ability to take notes, and everyone is enamored with her runway. The judges tell Jorgeous that she suffered in the roast, but that she has a cute runway appearance. Willow informs Ross that she had a solid start to her set but that she could have gone even further. Michelle and Ru are huge fans of her runway. Angeria’s confidence in her routine was praised by Michelle, and the lime green gown she is wearing was praised by the judges. The judges praised Daya’s runway performance, although they also thought that she became a little lost in her roast. The judges were not impressed with Deja’s appearance and joined in on her jokes during the roast. Camden’s stand-up performance was praised by the judges, who also noted that she looks stunning in her ballerina drag outfit.
After careful consideration, Ru declares that Bosco has been declared the winner of this week’s challenge. LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED! Lady Camden, Willow, and Angeria are all in good health. This week’s bottom three are as follows: Jorgeous, Daya Betty, and Deja Sky are all lip-syncing for their lives, and only one of them will make it out unscathed if they don’t hurry. In this video, the three bottom queens perform a lip-sync to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit single “good 4 u.” Ru reveals that Daya Betty will remain in the competition following an emotional performance from all three queens. This means that Jorgeous and Deja Sky are out of the competition, and they will be eliminated together. Both queens sashay away from the stage together.
