Rogue One Plot

When Orson Krennic, an Imperial weapons designer, shows up to pressure him into finishing the Death Star, a space station-based superweapon capable of destroying planets, research scientist Galen Erso and his family are hiding on the planet Lah’mu. While their daughter Jyn escapes and is saved by rebel extremist Saw Gerrera, Galen’s wife Lyra is killed in the clash.

A holographic message created by Galen is taken by cargo pilot Bodhi Rook, who has defected from the Empire, to Gerrera on the desert moon Jedha. This happens fifteen years later. An informant tells Cassian Andor of the Death Star and Rook’s defect from the Rebel Alliance. When Jyn escapes from an Imperial labour camp on Wobani, Bail Organa and Mon Mothma convince her to look for Galen and save him so that the Alliance can learn more about the Death Star. Instead of extracting Galen, Cassian is secretly told to kill him.

The Empire is taking kyber crystals out of Jedha to power the Death Star; Gerrera and his partisans are fighting back against them with weapons. Jyn, Cassian, and the reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO go there. Jyn contacts Gerrera, who has been imprisoning Rook, with the help of the mercenary Baze Malbus and the blind spiritual warrior Chirrut Îmwe.

They are instructed to retrieve the Death Star’s schematics from an Imperial data bank on the planet Scarif by Galen, who reveals in the message that he secretly built a vulnerability into the structure. Gerrera shows the message to her.

Krennic commands a low-powered test shot from the Death Star, which decimates Jedha’s capital. Gerrera stays behind to perish along with the city while Jyn and her group take Rook and leave the moon. Before seizing control of the project in response to Rook’s betrayal and security leak, Grand Moff Tarkin congratulates Krennic. On the planet Eadu, Rook directs the group to Galen’s Imperial research facility, where Cassian decides not to kill Galen.

Just before Rebel bombers attack the facility, Jyn enters the scene. Before Jyn and her group are able to flee on an Imperial cargo shuttle that has been stolen, Galen is wounded and dies in her arms. Darth Vader calls Krennic to account for the Death Star’s assault on Jedha. Krennic asks Vader for help in getting an audience with the Emperor, but Vader chokes him instead and tells him to make sure there are no more breaches.

The Alliance Council rejects Jyn’s plan to steal the Death Star blueprints using the Rebel fleet because they believe it is now impossible to defeat the Empire. Jyn’s group led a small squad of Rebel volunteers to raid the databank after growing impatient with their inaction. When Jyn and Cassian arrive on Scarif aboard the stolen Imperial ship that Rook refers to as “Rogue One,” the other Rebels attack the Imperial garrison as a distraction as the disguised pair infiltrate the base with K-2SO.

Intercepted Imperial transmissions provide the Alliance with information about the raid, and they send out their fleet to assist. K-2SO makes a sacrifice so that Jyn and Cassian can get the information. Malbus is slain shortly after Îmwe turns on the master switch to enable communication with the Rebel fleet. After informing the Rebel fleet that it must disable the planetary shield in order to transmit the schematics, Rook is murdered by a grenade.

Two Star Destroyers are destroyed by Rebel Admiral Raddus using a Hammerhead corvette, and the debris from the collision hits the shield generator and disables the shield. After getting the schematics, Jyn and Cassian are ambushed by Krennic, who is then shot and injured by Cassian. Moments before the Death Star enters orbit above Scarif, Jyn transmits the base’s schematics to the Rebel command ship using its antenna. Tarkin uses another low-power shot to destroy the antenna, killing Krennic, and the resulting impact causes an approaching blast to engulf the base, killing Cassian, Jyn, and the remaining ground forces.

The Rebel fleet is about to launch into hyperspace when Vader’s approaching Star Destroyer intercepts Admiral Raddus and a number of the fleet’s ships. In an effort to recover the schematics, Vader boarded the Rebel command ship and massacred numerous rebel soldiers, but a spacecraft managed to escape with them on board. Princess Leia Organa says from the escaping ship that the schematics will offer hope.
