1 Person Dead After Helicopter Crash In Columbia County

“There was an airplane flying around, and I didn’t understand that, so I went out and sat on my glider,” Bill Barratt of Mifflin Township said. “Shortly after the airplane was flying around, a helicopter flew in to start crop dusting.”

Barratt has watched crop dusters fly over his house for years, but this one was unusual.

“When he flew over my neighbor’s house, I knew something wasn’t right.” “I just knew while I was sitting there, ‘he’s going to crash,” Barratt said.

Newswatch 16 spotted personnel removing debris from a tree that seemed to be entangled in a power line. Theodore Farwell, 39, the aircraft’s pilot, was killed in the crash.

“I jumped in my car and drove up here.” “I was running late when he crashed, and there was a fire right in front of his house,” Barratt recounted.

But when Bill spotted the same helicopter on the ground, surrounded by fire and FAA crews, he couldn’t believe he had just watched it hover over his house moments before. “It was skimming the top of those ears of corn,” he said. And I’ve lived here previously, and I’ve seen them do it before, just not at that low of a level.”

The South Centre Township Police Department, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board are all investigating the fatal collision in Columbia County.
