The final Hawkeye confirmed who is the Rolex watch that appears in the series. In fact, it belongs to Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini) and suggests that in the past she was involved with SHIELD and that she was agent 19. So is Clint’s wife Mockingbird? Here’s what we know.
The watch appears right in the first episode of Hawkeye, straight from the Avengers Compound. It is auctioned on the black market and stolen by the Tracksuit Mafia, and Clint Barton’s goal is to recover it. There are many theories that wondered who the Avengers watch really belonged to, but immediately there was a connection with Laura.
Clint in the series reveals that the Rolex was someone’s now retired and that if it falls into the wrong hands it could blow this person’s cover. Hawkeye also talks about it with his wife over the course of the series, who speaks to him in German to hide the subject from his children. From now on, speculations have turned towards the fact that Laura was a secret SHIELD agent, and more precisely Mockingbird.
The Mystery Of Watch Is Solved
The mystery of the owner of the Hawkeye watch was officially solved in the show’s final episode. In fact, Clint takes the Rolex home with him at Christmas and returns it to Laura when the children open the presents. Confirmation that the watch belonged to Laura Barton is not the only certainty though. In fact, the SHIELD logo is engraved on the back, with the number 19 below.
This confirms that Laura was indeed a SHIELD agent in the past and known as Agent 19 during her years in business. In the comics, Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird marries Hawkeye and is known as Agent 19 when working for SHIELD. The back of the watch implies that Laura Barton is the MCU’s Mockingbird.
Viewers can thus deduce that Clint and Laura met during the time they were working at SHIELD. But what was Mockingbird’s job? Hawkeye implies that Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin was interested in acquiring the watch, but the reason is unknown. Did the villain just want an item from the Avengers Compound, or is there something more to the Agent / Laura Barton?
There are no plans for Hawkeye season 2 at the moment, but it seems unlikely that Laura will abandon her family to become a superhero at this stage. If Clint Barton’s story continues, Laura Mockingbird’s past with SHIELD could be explored further.
Finally, we remind you that Mockingbird in Agents of SHIELD is played by Adrianne Palicki and that her character’s name is Barbara “Bobbi” Morse-Barton. Could this make us understand that the series is not really considered canonical in the MCU? We will see how this evolves and if we discover something new about it.
