The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a web television special based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name that will air in the United States this holiday season. As a sequel to the films Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Ragnarok, the special will be broadcast on Disney Channel.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will be released on Disney+ in December 2022 as part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is scheduled to premiere in December 2022.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Production

A new television special starring the Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in December 2020, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The holiday special will be written and directed by James Gunn, who also served as the writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Gunn described it as “one of my favorite stories ever,” with a plot that was “as crazy and fun as can be” and that he had “never stopped bugging [Feige] about” over the course of several years.

He went on to say that the special would be live-action and canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and he mentioned that he was a fan of the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) when he was younger. Originally written “years ago,” Gunn completed the script in April 2021 after initially writing the treatment.

Several of the main cast members from the Guardians films appear in the film, which takes place between Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2019). (2023). According to Gunn, portions of the special would be useful in laying the groundwork for material in Vol. 3. In June, Vin Diesel, who portrays Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stated that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was enthusiastic about a planned story for Groot to return to his home planet of Planet X.
