The second season of Entleman Jack has begun, and Anne Lister’s life is becoming increasingly difficult to manage.
The BBC confirmed Gentleman Jack Season 2 in May 2019, following the first season’s debut to 5.1 million fans in the UK, and the time has finally come for Season 2 to be available on digital streaming services.
Gentleman Jack is a historical television series created by Sally Wainwright. Suranne Jones plays landowner and industrialist Anne Lister in the film, which takes place in Yorkshire in 1832. The show is based on Lister’s diaries, which contain more than four million words and are mostly written in secret code, documenting a lifetime of lesbian encounters.
Anne Lister’s life as an LGBTQ+ trailblazer, avid learner, and cryptic diarist is dramatized. The journey of Gentleman Jack on BBC One and HBO is a true masterpiece.
Suranne Jones portrayed real-life lesbian pioneer Anne Lister, who attempted to push the boundaries of acceptable behaviour in Georgian Yorkshire, resisted the position assigned to her by societal structure, and lived her truth, as we’d say nowadays.

Gentleman Jack Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
*WARNING: Gentleman Jack season 2 episode 2 spoilers follow*
While Anne Lister and Ann Walker are enjoying themselves in Paris, the entrance of Anne’s flamboyant ex-girlfriend, Isabella “Tib” Norcliffe (played beautifully by The Larkins and After Love’s Joanna Scanlan), casts a pall over the festivities.
Tib has, according to her own admission, ‘been on the sauce’ by the time she arrives when Anne and Ann are dining, and she is quickly making very indiscreet remarks about Anne Lister’s other former lover Mariana Lawton, who is also present (Lydia Leonard). Anne Lister, on the other hand, is determined to keep Ann in the dark about the nature of her relationship with Mariana.
As they set out to climb a snow-covered Mont Blanc, the couple is enjoying one other’s company, but Ann is curious about Mariana and wants to discover the truth about what happened to her. In the same way that Anne is beginning to open up, she is also becoming increasingly anxious about Mariana’s jealous reaction to her relationship with Ann Walker.
Disputes within the family
Upon Ann’s return to Halifax, her relatives, particularly Mr. and Mrs. Priestley (Peter Davison and Amelia Bullmore), are concerned over the state of Ann and Anne’s relationship, as well as possible harm to Ann’s image. It is also suggested that they try to marry Ann off to an old acquaintance, James Ingham, who is a wealthy businessman.
When Anne and Ann come home and attempt to build bridges with Ann’s family, the mementos they bring back or the stories they tell about their travels do not seem to delight them, and Ann is disturbed that they continue to treat her as an invalid. Anne tries to comfort her that, over time, they may change their minds, but that she has the ability to control her own life right now.
Anne encourages her sister Elizabeth (Katherine Kelly) to write to her so that they can begin the process of dividing their estate, but Elizabeth’s cunning husband (Derek Riddell) is determined to keep an eye on things…
Mr. Washington (Joe Armstrong), the estate manager, is worried about his daughter Suzannah (Amy James-Kelly), who is wedded to Anne’s tenant Thomas Sowden. Mr Washington (Joe Armstrong) is concerned regarding his daughter Suzannah (Amy James-Kelly) (Tom Lewis). Susannah adores her husband, but she despises living with his uncivilised family, particularly with Thomas’ uncle Ben, whom she despises even more (Anthony Flanagan).
Unfortunately, while Ben is getting increasingly suspicious about what has happened to his missing brother Sam and Thomas’ abusive father, he also makes it plain that he is content to let sleeping dogs lie as long as he can continue to live on the farm. Upon approaching Ben and telling him to leave, Ben threatens to reveal Sam’s death to the public…
Gentleman Jack season 2 premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. (British time). The premiere will air on HBO on Monday, April 25 in the United States. It will be released in eight parts, with fresh episodes premiering each week.
