Emma Stone Opens Up About Why She’s Considering Dropping Her Stage Name
The actress from Poor Things, whose true name is Emily Jean Stone, recently said that she would rather prefer to be named Emily again, even if she had to adopt the name “Emma” when she initially joined the Screen Actors Guild.
She said, “That would be so nice, I would like to be Emily” in an April 24 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Emma clarified that there was already another actress registered with the union under the name “Emily Stone,” therefore she had to assume that name while obtaining her SAG card.
Though some in Hollywood do refer to her by her own name, it might not be a dream after all. She said, “When I get to know them, people that I work with do. I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.'”

In reality, after contributing to the song “Florida!!!” on friend Taylor Swift’s new album, the Oscar winner was finally given credit for her true name, Emily Jean Stone.
And how did Emma, who is married to Dave McCary and has a 3-year-old daughter, initially come up with her stage name? Well, it’s not entirely unrelated to her admiration for Emma Bunton, also known as Baby Spice of the Spice Girls.
In a 2018 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she said, “Growing up I was super blonde, and my real is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice, and guess what! Now I am.”
“So that’s like pretty messed up,” she joked.
She continued, “It wasn’t necessarily because of her. but yes, in second grade did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes, I did. Was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes, it was.”
