Season 4 of Stranger Things is darker, ruder, and more ruthless than any previous season. The season begins with a physical bloodbath, putting favorite characters like Max (Sadie Sink) and Steve (Joe Keery) in grave danger.

You might find yourself worrying about the fate of your favorite character while you watch Stranger Things Season 4 Part 1 on Netflix.

After all, the Vecna, this season’s new monster, is a horrific creature that worms his way into scared teens’ nightmares before murdering them in mid-air utilizing his supernatural abilities. It’s game over once the Vecna has locked his gaze on you.

This season, Max Mayfield is an example of this. Max has withdrawn from the companionship of Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Mike, still hurting over the murder of her brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) (Finn Wolfhard). She follows Hawkins High with her headphones on, blasting Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” her favorite song. Max is an easy target for Vecna, but does it mean she’ll perish?

Does Steve die in Stranger Things?

Steve is going through a love problem when fans first see him in Season 4. Graduation from high school is approaching, and Steve is undecided about whether or not he wants to take a girlfriend to college with him. When the plot pushes them into high gear, Steve and Robin both work at the local video store and commiserate.

Eddie Munson, a new character charged with murdering local cheerleader Chrissy, is tracked down by Steve and Robin. Unfortunately, they immediately learn that Chrissy has been murdered by Vecna, Season 4’s new villain, who is “cursing” and killing inhabitants of the village to further his evil goals.

After a second murder, Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Max run across Nancy, who is investigating Eddie’s uncle. Steve, Dustin, and Lucas assist Max in overcoming her curse, while Nancy and Robin speak with Victor Creel, who has personally suffered Vecna’s curse.

In the absence of Jonathan, Steve and Nancy seem to have lingering affections for one other. The group also works together to examine the old Creel House, where they learn Vecna has been hiding in the Upside Down.

Steve, Dustin, Max, Robin, Lucas, Eddie, and Nancy eventually go out on a hike to find a “portal” into the Upside Down, which they eventually find in Lover’s Lake. When Steve offers to go down to open the gate, one of the Upside Down’s residents drags him under, forcing Nancy, Robin, and Eddie to rush in and save him.

Steve suffers a terrible wound as a result of the Upside Down creatures’ attack, but he lives. Between episodes, it appeared that Steve was in great danger, but don’t worry: towards the end of Season 4 Part 1, Steve is fine, but trapped in the Upside Down after Vecna kidnaps Nancy. When the program returns in July for Season 4 Part 2, fans will have to wait and see what happens.
