AMC has renewed “Dark Winds” for a second season.

On June 12, AMC debuted the historical crime thriller. Both the first and second seasons will include a total of six episodes. Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series served as the inspiration for the TV show.

The series is set in 1971 in a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation close to Monument Valley, following Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he battles a string of crimes that at first glance seem unconnected.

He reveals the scars from his past more and more as he gets closer to the truth. Jim Chee, his new deputy, travels with him on this trip (Kiowa Gordon). Chee also has unfinished business from his time growing up on the reservation.

Along with Deanna Allison, Rainn Wilson, Elva Guerra, Jeremiah Bitsui, Eugene Brave Rock, and Noah Emmerich, Jessica Matten also appears in the movie.

The series creator and executive producer are Graham Roland. Along with acting, McClarnon also executive produces. Executive producers include Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Annie Hillerman, Chris Eyre, Vince Calandra, Vince Gerardis, and Tina Elmo.

Dan McDermott, head of programming and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, remarked, “This once-in-a-lifetime creative department and cast have achieved something truly exceptional with “Dark Winds.” We are eager to finish this thrilling first season with the audience and welcome back Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn for a second season on AMC and AMC+ the following year.

Thank you so much to everyone on the production crew, especially executive producers Chris Eyre, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, and Zahn McClarnon, who also leads the cast and infuses all he does with humanity, authority, and the knowledge of a life well-lived.

According to Nielsen Live+3 statistics, 2.2 million people watched the series premiere on AMC. The process of bringing the novels to the screen came to a close with this. Hillerman’s works were initially optioned by Redford more than 30 years ago.

70% of “Dark Winds” was shot on tribal lands at Tesuque Pueblo in New Mexico using their Camel Rock Studios facility with special permission. Cochiti Pueblo, located in New Mexico, provided the backdrop for another 30% of the series, which was shot there.
