The first season of Cursed, which premiered on Netflix in July 2020, was a big hit with viewers, and now they’re asking if there’s a second season in the works.
There were ten episodes in the inaugural season, and boy, were they action-packed. In a mystical realm based on the graphic novel of the same name by The Dark Knight Returns writer Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, the mediaeval fantasy presented us to a barely recognised ensemble of Arthurian stalwarts. Upon first inspection, the characters in Cursed look very similar. There’s Katherine Langford as Nimue, Devon Terrell as Arthur, Daniel Sharman as Lancelot, Sebastian Armesto as King Uther, and Gustaf Skarsgrd as Merlin, a debauched spin on the legendary sorcerer. After a close reading of The Once and Future King, however, nothing is what you may expect to find. If you’re a true Arthurian scholar, you’ll have a heart attack reading this book. Wheeler and the TV writing team for Netflix then adapted the scenario that emerged from their creative blender onto the pages of Cursed, resulting in a type of second-degree deformity.
Cursed isn’t a bad show by any means, but it’s not a must-see. The film’s production qualities are excellent, and the talented young cast delivers a number of standout moments. Merlin, played by Skarsgrd, steals every scene he’s in. The combination of Miller and Wheeler’s storytelling prowess makes for a potent potion. Season 1 isn’t likely to be a repetition of The Sword in the Stone in 2020.
No official word from Netflix yet, but it seems all but certain that Cursed will return for a second season. As of this writing, this is all we know about the situation.
HAS NETFLIX RENEWED CURSED FOR SEASON 2?
Sadly the answer is no. Netflix quietly cancelled Cursed after one season in July 2021, but it didn’t say anything. Because the fantasy series was number one on Netflix back in July 2020, this news is a little weird.
WHY DID NETFLIX CANCEL CURSED?
In comparison to other Netflix programmes, Cursed’s termination news went under the radar as Netflix did not give a strong and quick explanation for axing the show. It’s possible that, despite Season 1’s high ratings when it debuted, the audience numbers from that season weren’t enough to sustain the show in the long run. Considering how many series Netflix takes on at a given time and how much money was presumably invested in Cursed’s mediaeval setting, there may also have been some funding concerns.
WHAT WOULD THE PLOT OF CURSED SEASON 2 HAVE BEEN?
There are many unanswered questions in Season 1 of Cursed, despite the fact that there will be no conclusion. As the Queen of the Fey, Nimue is considered dead after being shot with an arrow. Father Carden, leader of the Red Paladins, was slain by Merlin, now wielding the Sword of Power (Christian monks who want to eradicate all of the magical and non-human people).
Guinevere had joined Arthur in battle, and he discovered that the Weeping Monk—later revealed to be Lancelot—had ridden off with the child Percival when Gawain, the Green Knight, was killed.
When it came to delving more into the character’s backstory, actor Katherine Langford told Elle that she had one goal in mind.
“There’s a lot of talk about the sword this season, and I feel like it would be interesting to see just how deep Nimue’s powers go and what kind of untapped power she has within.”
Devon Terrell, the actor who portrays Arthur, has said that his character still has a “long trip ahead.”
“I didn’t want to create a performance that sat on the fence. I wanted to pick a direction, which moments I made him vulnerable, which moments I made him feel like he’s becoming a leader. And it’s the beginning of a really long journey.”
Who is in the cast of Cursed season 2?
People who are important in this show will have a lot to talk about in season 2. That’s good, because season 1 set up a lot of interesting stories for almost all of them. There’s even a chance that the Green Knight, played by Matt Stokoe, could be brought back to life by magic. The ability to rise from the dead would be a good thing for him, after all.
Katherine Langford and Devon Terrell, who played Nimue and Arthur in the first movie, are almost certain to be back for the second movie. Gustaf Skarsgrd’s Merlin, Daniel Sharman’s Weeping Monk, Uther Pendragon, Lancelot, Pym, and Billy Jenkins Squirrel are all likely to show up a lot more in the show (revealed at the end of season 1 to be none other than future Knight of the Round Table, Perceval).
Peter Mullan, who played Father Carden, was killed off on the season 1 finale. We may not see him again in season 2. To see Father Carden in season 2, he will need some kind of flashback or vision, but that’s not out of the question on this show. Because the Green Knight can’t regenerate, Father Carden won’t be able to do that.
