Black Mirror Season 6 Release Date, Cast, Plot & All That You Must Know!

After a long hiatus from new episodes of “Black Mirror,” the show is back with a bang. As a matter of fact, it’s the longest hiatus the show has ever experienced since its debut in 2011, even after the cancellation of its fifth season, with it, has been more than two years since then.

With episodes set in the past, present, and future, the anthology series has received widespread critical acclaim and widespread popularity. It examines how various forms of technology and screens — hence the series’ name, “Black Mirror” — can change our lives, sometimes for the better, but more often for the worse, and how we can adapt to these changes. With the exception of a few episodes that are unquestionably better than others, the show’s cultural impact is undeniable, and going two years without seeing any new stories from the mind of Charlie Brooker has been difficult.

To make the wait a little more bearable, we’ve decided to take a look at all of the information that’s currently available about the future of “Black Mirror” and make some educated guesses about when we might be able to see Season 6, as well as what stories and actors we might see on the show in the coming seasons.

Black Mirror Season 6 Release Date

Season 6 of Black Mirror has not yet been renewed, and it is unclear when it will. Though not officially canceled, the show appears to be on an indefinite hiatus, with creator and writer Charlie Brooker stating that the horrors of 2020 may cause audiences’ appetite for the dystopian series to diminish. Instead, Brooker worked on the Netflix comedy special “Death to 2020,” which was released at the end of the year and was written and produced by him as well as others. No one knows what he has been up to this year, but it’s possible that he has spent time writing for a new season, just as it’s equally possible that he hasn’t been writing at all.

Whatever the case, it’s safe to assume that a new season of “Black Mirror” would take at least a year to produce based on previous production cycles. That means that if writing began in January 2021 after Brooker finished “Death to 2020,” the earliest we would likely see a new season of “Black Mirror” would be in early 2022, according to past production cycles.

Black Mirror Season 6 Cast

“Black Mirror” is an anthology series, which means that each episode features an entirely new cast of characters who are created specifically for the episode. There have been a few exceptions, such as Hannah John-Kamen, Michaela Coel, and Daniel Lapaine, who have all appeared in multiple episodes and played multiple characters each time. Brooker also stated in an interview with The Independent that he had ideas for sequels to the episodes “White Bear” and “Be Right Back,” which could potentially provide an opportunity for the casts of both episodes, which include Lenora Crichlow, Hayley Atwell, and Domhnall Gleeson, to return to their respective roles.

Due to the fact that more recent seasons have cast both British and American actors, ranging from celebrities such as Miley Cyrus to lesser-known cast members, there is no telling who we might see in the future. Some of the actors who fans would like to see include Bryan Cranston, Hugh Laurie, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rosamund Pike, Jared Leto, John Boyega, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adam Driver, Danny DeVito, and “the entire parks and recreation cast,” according to a Reddit thread started by u/DeviantDevi. To be completely honest, no one is off-limits.

Black Mirror Season 6 Plot

As with its cast, the nature of “Black Mirror” as an anthology series makes it difficult to predict exactly what will happen in a future season, with each episode so far serving as a stand-alone story. Having said that, every episode takes place in the same world, with Easter eggs and similar technology appearing in a variety of stories throughout.

It would be interesting to see how a dystopian show like “Black Mirror,” which frequently takes place in the present, would interact with the pandemic that we are all currently experiencing. Perhaps a storey about how technology helps people stay connected, or a storey about how technology distorts reality because a person’s only view of the outside world is their screen, could be told? What about a storey that takes place hundreds of years in the future during a pandemic?

If we do get sequels to “Be Right Back,” it will be interesting to see how the android recreation of the deceased Ash (Gleeson) changes over the course of the storey. Is he still Ash as he gains new knowledge and experiences over the years? Or does he begin to deteriorate over time, eventually becoming something akin to an abomination? It’s possible that the characters in “White Bear” will be tortured by reliving the same horrific day over and over again before having their memories erased, similar to a demented version of “The Good Place,” and that they will somehow manage to escape.

Netflix is currently streaming all five seasons of “Black Mirror,” as well as the interactive film “Bandersnatch,” at no additional cost.
